Apparently the first trailers for this movie have hit Europe, and a red-band trailer for the film includes a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" done by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, with vocals by Karen O (http://exclaim.ca/News/trent_reznor_karen_o_reportedly_collaborate_on_led_zeppelin_cover_for_girl_with_dragon_tattoo_soundtrack). The trailer doesn't seem to have hit the internets, yet.
Given the awesomeness that was the Saul Williams cover of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" that Reznik produced, and being a fucking huge Zep fan, I am officially really fucking intrigued.
-
dude, too cool.
especially since it's like the one song that jimmy page actually wrote! :P
-
Geez, you squeeze one too many lemons that one time and you spend your whole life never living it down. :P
-
i still love you, goosey. regardless of page's sticky fingers and sudden memory loss.
and yea, totally stoked to hear this track!
-
kinda nsfw i guess... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kOFGI0p6SM&feature=player_embedded
-
That sounded even better than I imagined it could be.
-
just saw the swedish version... not sure why they're remaking it -- it's solid as is -- but given that it's fincher and reznor... i'm really looking forward to their spin on it.
and rooney is hot.
-
???
That was more awesome than I was prepared to witness in less than two minutes.
And, I mean, not that I wasn't going to see it anyway, but if there was ANY question, I'm totally fucking SOLD after that.

ROFL
Thanks, Teddles, knew I could count on you :))
-
we should just add it to the emoticons at this point. beats typing up that url each time.
-
It's best at the points where it moves further away from the original and does something new. Otherwise I'm just reminded of all the things I'm missing.
-
we should just add it to the emoticons at this point. beats typing up that url each time.
The first time that came up, I was totally going to argue the point, but being that I've invoked it twice now myself, maybe not so much. Still though, I'm relatively sure there aren't too many people that would use it besides you and I  I dunno, maybe my memory's bad, but I don't remember anyone else using it before.
-
freak does!
-
Okay, so that's THREE out of he 40 of us that have shown up thus far... :P
Then again, I did propose the cactuar emoticon strictly for Usman...

i've been listening to this loop forever.
nice real long chunk of the score.
http://dragontattoo.com/
we're in for a treat when this record drops.
-
YES! this loop! THIS LOOP! :D
-
7 mins of pure joy.
people pee-peeing it and saying it's the same note over and over are fucking redonkulous.
there's so much going on in that track.
-
i wish i made this.
-
*shiver*
It's so perfect. SO FREAKING PERFECT. AUGH. Why isn't it December yet? (Wait, don't answer that, I've got stuff going on between now and then anyway)

SO FUCKING STOKED. THESE DESCRIPTIONS SOUND AMAZING... and it looks like we are getting more than just a simple remake.

I wanna SEEEEEEEE this 8 minute non-trailer! Somebody get this shit on the internet already!

AMAZING
THEY DID IT AGAIN.
http://t.co/xxHlfXKt
soundtrack sounds amazing and the visuals are ^_^
this is a hell lot more of a remake.
i'm loving this more than the original so far.
-
looks awesome! The score sounds good, but it's definitely Reznor/Ross. Hopefully there is more to it than just that sound. (no matter how much I love that sound. I just don't want to see him pigeonhole himself with what he can do when it comes to scores.)
-
it sounds like it could be the motif of the score, and im okay with that. Id listen to an hour and a half long build of that song honestly. im really excited for this. looking forward to a vinyl release.
-
i might skip the vinyl this time around and just get the blu-ray
-
I hate to say this. But since TPD has been talking about this. I only know about the sound track. And nothing about the movie. So much so that yesterday, I was on youtube, and watched a preview for a movie, no clue what it was. And I keep thinking need to remember to check out this movie. And it was this one... So I kinda feel bad about knowing nothing about the movie (other then the soundtrack) BUT it looks kick ass. SO I can't wait for both the soundtrack and movie to come out!

Just putting the final touches on the sequencing of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo soundtrack record... it was very difficult.

And why was that? It's clocking in at two hours and forty-some odd minutes! We've lost our minds. Clear some disk space!

-
the score is 2:40 or the movie?
-
i believe he's referring to the soundtrack!
keep in mind, if this is going to be like the last one, he's probably extending the pieces in the film into full fledged songs. also, he came up up with hours of material before fincher even shot a thing... so there's probably a lot of awesome new stuff on this soundtrack.
^_^
-
Holy shit, that will be at least 4 LP's for the vinyl version at the quality that Reznor had TSN pressed!
-
SO EXCITED
-
might be a week old news, but like the cover.
-
yea it's simple and minimal but effective.
i believe it's based off this equally cool poster/promo art:

6 LPS IN THE VINYL EDITION. AND HTDA IS ON IT... WAIT FOR IT... COVERING "Is Your Love Strong Enough" FROM 'LEGEND'.
YES, THE BRYAN FERRY SONG.
LOL
-
Oh Trent we can always count on you to overdo things
-
Oh jesus, that thing's gonna cost me an arm and a leg.
Figures he picks the Ferry song with Gilmour playing the solo. 8-p
Oh the lolz picturing Trent remaking this video as well as the song.

The 300 dollar deluxe edition. :'(
-
/cry indeed. I am hoping over the next few months he will release a vinyl only version for $50 or less.
-
Im considering overtime at work to get the thing, I should probably talk myself out of it but as for now, Its a possibility. The limited amount and the fact that it's signed are the big pulls, the USB and poster are whatever items. I'm not sure if a much cheaper version can be made, because there are 6 vinyls, I figured the packaging would get tricky.
-
here's things to consider:
-the last time he offered a limited edition deluxe it sold out within 3 days or so... and that set has been to known to go for quite a bit on ebay
-currently the only way to get it on vinyl
-currently the only way to get a 96k high def sound version (no blu-ray this time around, trenk replied to my query with "long story")
-it looks pretty
and the six song teaser ep and the 8 min trailer sound and look ^_^
stream them below:

50's kinda low for 6 lps in this day and age... but i get what you're saying.
-
Yeah, with that time slot I'm pretty much fucked. I don't want to settle for the cd but I might have to. I hate knowing people are going to buy this just because they know they can jack the price up on eBay while regular shmucks like me cant afford to immediately drop that kind of cash. If I'm lucky maybe my local record store will buy one or two and I can snag it later.
-
i'm sure some regular schmucks will buy it too... and prolly pay off some bills in the process by jackin up the price.
it's the american way.
-
50's kinda low for 6 lps in this day and age... but i get what you're saying.
Considering I bought The Slip on vinyl direct from nin.com's amazon store for $8, there is hope.
-
i wonder if the charge for the item is immediate, or will it charge once it ships..
-
dude, i have high hopes for this cover. i dont even care.
-
Anyone else listening to the six-track sampler? It's very Trent; not sure how else to feel about it but I don't dislike it. I'm wondering if it's one of those things where it makes more sense in the movie. What amazes me is that he was able to retain the distribution rights, because normally film composers never own their work.
-
i actually really like the sampler. its great atmosphere music. "please take your hand away" is my favorite of the six. i noticed its out of order from how the tracks are sequenced for the album.
-
Yeah I reordered it into a playlist after it downloaded. I think it's good for what it is, but I kept recognizing little bits of melody here and there and so I'm not sure yet if he's being too derivative overall. Won't know that until we hear the whole soundtrack, of course.

the 8 and a half minute clip in the link i posted seems to suggest that it does.
then again that was scored sepparately, but still.
i got faith in this soundtrack. like what i've heard so far.
-
Having listened to it several times today, I've decided that I'm rather fond of "Hidden In Snow" and "Oraculum." In some ways I think it's more realized, as it were, than The Social Network, but you have to listen to it more than once to understand that.
-
that song that comes in about 7 minutes into the trailer sounds amazing.
-
So mostly to prove that Guitar International will accept content from anybody, but also to be a good NINnie, I wrote this:

-
I like that you went into detail about the whole one hour photo/still ep thing. tis a good piece.
-
Thanks! Yeah, I wanted to illustrate that Trent has been going in this direction for a long time, it's not just a typical career 180 like people think musicians do once they reach a certain age.
-
yeah, even with the lost highway and natural born killers. you could tell it was written by a fan :)

Good read. Thanks!
I think I am going to do what I did for TSN and not listen to the score until after seeing the movie. I may check out the sampler though as my curiosity is now getting the better of me.
-
and mad props for mentioning the quake soundtrack... which still holds up and is really underrated in terms of scores and shit.
yea, really digging the sampler. stoked for friday.
-
much like ghosts... the bests bits weren't even in the preview.
holy hell this is epic.
np: a thousand details

-
THere's a way that you can listen to the soundtrack without buying 14,000 ridiculous vinyls right?
-
http://www.nullco.com/GDT/usd.php
Three cd's for $14 or digital for $12.
-
yea, it's even on itunes... or other channels, of course.
so i listened to the whole thing, and holy hell, the bests bits weren't even in that sampler.
really nice.
three word review:
NINE INCH BELLS

creepy and awesome
-
Cut into pieces, a thousand details, and an itch are currently my favorite songs. This soundtrack is amazing.
-
I really like the sound track. However, the length makes it kinda a pain in my ass... 3 hours is a lot of tunes to sit down and listen to... But I have gotten through it. About twice now. (The Zep cover and the HTDA cover have been getting a lot of repeats. I'm really impressed with the HTDA cover, while it has been a long time since their ep came out. I wasn't impressed with her voice mostly just due to her lack of emotion... But here it seams to me that she put some heart and soul into it... Its damn good.) Over all I really like it. Long, but good. I hope they use a lot of it in the movie...
-
real good interview.
http://thefilmstage.com/features/interview-trent-reznor-discusses-the-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo/
some snippets:
it was a whole 14 months of our lives working pretty much everyday, and that’s also why the soundtrack record is long; we just kept writing music. There’s more music than there is in film. We thought, ‘This was all written for this specific purpose, so they all feel like relatives, as songs. Let’s put them out as batch of what we did this year.’
Not to sound arrogant, but I find quite often I run into people who think I’m a prick or difficult to work with. I expect excellence, and I demand it. If we’re going to do this, let’s not fuck around, let’s do it. Then let’s do it a little bit better, because why would you not do that? What’s the point of it if it’s not the best work you can do? I found someone that may have up the ante on me with Fincher. He challenges you and sometimes provokes you, but I have complete faith in what he’s after is excellence. I believe in his vision, support it and respect it, and I feel the same affinity from him towards me. It’s led to a good working relationship. It’s not always, ‘Let’s hug each other! Yeah, I agree! Great, I love that too!’ Quite often, we’re butting heads about certain things, but it’s with respect.

So I've concluded that this is a great background music kind of album, great for listening while cleaning or folding laundry, not so good for Saturday afternoon grocery shopping
-
So, the soundtrack isn't in the correct order to how it's arranged in the film. I'll probably have to wait until the DVD release to fix it myself, but hopefully this bugs other people on the ninternet. Even if there are reoccurring motifs, I'd rather just listen to them again. I wonder if fincher made some last minute rearrangements after the soundtrack was released or if Trent arranged them this way.
-
I'd guess that Trent & Atticus made a few decisions on what would sound better from an album's perspective for the track arrangement that differed from what actually ends up in the movie.
-
Its nothing too major, I just noticed some of the opening tracks are out of order. there are also some sound clips within the score, so it's almost like a "that's where I am in the story right now" type thing.
-
Yes Trevor has noted in the past as well that the sequencing on a score album is usually different than the actual running order in the film because it's a different rendering. That's what DVD-rips are for. ;)
And this:
I’d like to say I believe that, but, in reality, I can look back on my own work and feel great about something, then it gets critically shit-canned or someone hates it, and that’s the one that sticks with me [Laughs]. I feel like I’ve failed somebody.
...means Trent is still upset over rynne hating The Fragile.
-
-
I'm curious as to how many of the instruments on the soundtrack are organic? I'm slightly familiar with "replacement," or filtering the instrument through the computer and substituting it's original sound for another. Just a question that popped into my head today while listening to the soundtrack again, wondered if anyone knew a little more than me on the subject.
-
I received the score on CD for xmas, but haven't listened to it yet. I plan on seeing the movie this weekend.
-
apologies if this video has been posted before, but I just came across it and decided to share. It is about the mixing of the sound for the movie. Trent's still rocking the stubble. 8)
http://www.wired.com/underwire/2012/01/sound-mix-dragon-tattoo/
-
i actually havent come across this yet, thanks!
-
I just got back from seeing the movie. This is coming from someone that hasn't read the book or seen the original movie... but it was fucking great. I enjoyed it more than I expected. That was my first time hearing the score too. The score was much more ambient and tribal than his last one. I can't wait to listen to my CD's now.
Thoughts with spoiler:
The rape scene was pretty goddamn intense and traumatic to watch. I had to actually turn away at one point and I am not a squeamish person when it comes to movies. It was pretty real, sick, inhumane, etc... everything that rape actually is. I suppose the realism was necessary for the satisfaction that came with Lisbeth's vengeance, but holy hell...
Mara Rooney is a fucking star. I found her character lacking in nothing for that role. Hopefully some sort of award and recognition is coming her way.
It definitely didn't feel like 2h:40m either. Bravo Fincher on another fantastic movie. I remember way back wondering WTF when I first heard the guy that directed Madonna's "Respect Yourself" video was going to be debut directing the new Alien movie (Alien3), but he hasn't disappointed me yet. (I think the only movie of his I haven't seen is Benjamin Button.)
Ok, enough drool. ;-)
-
I was starting to think I was one of the only ones!
Side note: she's a babe!
-
Side note: she's a babe!
Teeps could have told you that a long time ago :P
-
I have no doubt in my mind about that!
-
I'd like to rooney her maras.
-
So I see Trent failed to score a second nomination for the score; ah well.
-
I can see why. It doesn't have as much of a concise theme to it, like TSN did. There are no real hooks. As much as you and I might rank fantastic ambiance above musical hooks, the Academy of Motion Pictures does not. 8|
I do see that Rooney Mara is nominated for best actress. Nice and well deserved.
-
Actually, I'd argue that it does more so factoring in what was submitted to the academy on that two disc set (vs the 3 disc set made public). The wind chimes and bell motif was felt throughout and I think it was a stronger work than TSN (which I fucking loved)...
Then again, this is the same academy that snubbed mansell and daft punk last year. and the mansell was the most ridiculous of reasons. Especially since they gave john williams TWO nominations this year and all he does is continue to rip off composers of the last 3 centuries. Yeah, I loved him as a kid too... then I caught on to what he was doing.
Ah well... at least Rooney and the cinematographer and the sound editing team got a nod.
-
I can see what you mean with the theme/motif, but it didn't have that defining melody like the piano in "Hand Covers Bruse." (The Academy loves that shit...just like you were saying for John Williams except 100% original).
But hell yes Daft Punk being snubbed for that score for Tron:Legacy. It is still something I listen to at least once a week. I love it. Between that and the TSN score, I didn't need any new music last year. <3
-
i happen to think the music for tgwtdt was done much better FOR the film than tsn. tsn is a great album, and almost needs no film to enjoy, but this was a fantastic soundtrack (tgwtdt) and was only better after seeing how well it supported the film. the snub frustrated me to no end.
-
tsn is a great album, and almost needs no film to enjoy
great point.
-
yeah, well said.
-
TGWTDT reminds me a lot of Still with a good dose of Ghosts (which is to say I dig it). I've yet to be able to listen to it all in one sitting, though, even when I'm sitting at a computer for hours wit work with my ipod.
-
still waiting for my cd to arrive. maybe they bundled it with the deluxe order. yes, i ordered the deluxe. yes, i don't know why.

goddamn though...thats a lot of dough.

yeah, i know... i jumped on it thinking it'll be ultra rare what with how the ghosts one sold out so quick...
whoops.
looks gorgeous though.
in retrospect it probably should have been hella cheaper.

-
if you need me to buy the other one off you, i totally will :D
-
i'm currently at a "do i really want vinyl" phase of my life... so i might take you up on that offer.
real cheap too. only 666 bucks!
-
thats such a sweet number
if i dont get one
mebe
-
(i'd sell it for far less btw :p)
but seriously, there's still more available. trent said there's a small number but than can be 5 or 50.

Finally able to afford the box set! So happy.
