I have the same hesitance, goose, for the same reason.  However, JJ has yet to disappoint me, so I remain optimistic.

Some friends of mine are using the Slogan: Fincher for VIII
however of all the choices they were going between, includng Ben Affleck,

JJ Abrams ain't so bad.
He's got two years and I'm sure he understands the pressure.

Part of me wishes they would have given it to an ultra-fanboy like Kevin Smith to see what would happen.

I thought Abrams is a pretty big SW fanboy. I mean, maybe not to the extent of Kevin Smith, who seems to be genetically predisposed to fanboy-ness in general. But I recall Abrams spending a good deal of his Star Trek promo interviews claiming he came into the franchise with no preconceptions because he'd always been a Star Wars fan to the exclusion of Star Trek.
