I have no idea, I have never seen a match and don't plan to. I've always found the sport to be funny.
They kind of hold each other, dance around a bit and then try to trip each other or something, while abiding to the massive amount of rules that go with it. It is all rather silly. It is all very traditional however and has been done for over 1000 years.

For a non-U2 fan, I still advise you to buy/download Achtung Baby and Zooropa. I think you would like them. The latter is basically an Eno/Flood album that U2 did the playing and vocals for. The last track has Johnny Cash on lead vocals and is <3<3<3.

Yeah, 2 years is hardly a break. There's longer intervals between tool records than that, and even from the fragile to with teeth. I think it was more for a mental refresh than anything else, to say "okay I have no commitment to this project until I WANT to," so I think if he's ready, he's ready. It would be just a bad as putting another soundtrack in the mix too soon, I'm happy he turned down that Abraham Lincoln vampire killer thing, that would have been a bad idea.im pretty intrigued in this new htda release, maybe it will have a gwtdt vibe since the three of them worked on that as well, that cover song they did for it was one of the better songs I've heard from them.

Sorry for the radio silence lately... I've been busy! There's a number of things to be revealed over the coming months. Some you may expect, others you may not. Patience, my friends.
Today's news is about my band How To Destroy Angels. I'm happy to announce we've formally partnered with Columbia Records for our next series of releases. The first of these will be available in November and it's called An Omen EP. As you may have guessed, it's an EP. It contains six songs, some of which are from our full-length LP which is coming early next year.
We are making some videos, we are going to be performing live, and that's all the details I have for now on those matters.
Regarding our decision to sign with Columbia, we've really spent a long time thinking about things and it makes sense for a lot of reasons, including a chance to work with our old friend Mark Williams. There's a much more granular and rambling answer I could give (and likely will in an interview someplace) but it really comes down to us experimenting and trying new things to see what best serves our needs. Complete independent releasing has its great points but also comes with shortcomings.
We are all very excited about you checking out the new stuff. Wish I could tell you more, but you know how this works... it would take all the fun out of it!

On February 21, 1995, Stephanie Nahas posted to alt.music.nin about meeting up with Danny Lohner, who mentioned at the time that Coil had remixed Eraser for an upcoming remix album. Sometime in the next few months, someone with reliable contacts with the Coil and NIN camps let on that several remixes were completed by Coil, but not all of them made the remix album. The Nine Inch Nails discography was updated to add the following tracks to "NIN PHANTOM SONGS"
Eraser (a version with worms)
The Downward Spiral (a gilded sickness)
The Downward Spiral (fullblown)
These were added a few lines below this existing entry:
Gave Up(remix by coil, used in movie Young Americans, faster than fixed version and uses the same sound template according to John Balance of Coil. fixed version appears on soundtrack)
Over the years, NIN fans helped dig up tracks on that PHANTOM NIN SONGS list, but these proved elusive. Peter Christopherson was asked in 2007 about any unreleased remixes for the launch of remix.nin.com:
"Thanks for writing and listening over the years, but sorry - to the best of my recollection everything we did was already used by Trent in public, except the Broken Movie, which I understand is available from some pirate.com type sites."
With the passing of John Balance and Peter Christopherson, I took the rumors of those remixes of The Downward Spiral and Eraser to be figments of the creative imagination of someone on alt.music.nin - as to the remix of Gave Up that appeared in Young Americans, that concretely existed. In 2012, longtime Echoing the Sound forum member Wizfan, hailing from Greece, contacted Danny Hyde:
"I had seen a YouTube video of yours a couple of years ago. You showed a box with the Nothing logo on it. Do you still have it? Could you tell us about it? We are interested in unreleased songs/remixes by Coil, NIN or other artists."
The response he got was pretty exciting -
"sure i have many unreleased versions of Gave up and closer, mixes created on the days but different and unheard even by trent

thats so funny, i just did download that Coil remix album not 3 days ago. I figured that was something everyone knew about and I was just behind on, I really like it.
I'm a lot more surprised by this htda release, while keep it together is my least favorite track on the album, and it feels like melody is a difficulty in it, the rest of the album is fairly strong and i really appreciate this release, especially the instrumental tracks. the final song has a rhythm that reminds me of "a violent fluid" off the march of the pigs ep, maybe only vaguely but i swear i hear it.

And more importantly, I didn't know about the Coil mixes either. These things showing up out of the blue made my year. My initial reaction is to be all like, "Holy shit, these are all better than the remixes that were released!" but I don't think I can really make that call until the euphoria of actually hearing new NIN/Coil tracks wears off. As it is, I feel comfortable in saying that the actual songs (i.e., the first 4 tracks) are easily as good as the officially released remixes. To me, the TDS-track mixes feel more Coil-like than the corresponding official tracks. And while I prefer the slice-n-dice vox higher in the mix than on "Gave Up (Open My Eyes)", I absolutely adore the way the slight amount of digital delay smears the guitars into big sheets of sawtooth distortion.

"Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor is set to partner with Beats by Dre to set up a new music streaming service called Daisy.
Earlier this year (October 17), Reznor wrote on his Facebook page that he would be collaborating with the headphones company on a range of “interesting projects” and has now revealed in an interview with The New Yorker (via Pitchfork) that this will include a music streaming service which is planned to launch next year.
The service, he said, “uses mathematics to offer suggestions to the listener… [but also] would present choices based partly on suggestions made by connoisseurs, making it a platform in which the machine and the human would collide more intimately.”
Comparing the service to existing streaming services like Spotify, he added: “Here’s sixteen million licensed pieces of music, they’ve said, but you’re not stumbling into anything. I wasn't expecting to like this, but I do. Has a more consistent soundworld than I was expecting based on the first release & An Omen. Some of the rhythms and melodic motifs are quite NIN, but the soundworld is sufficiently different to justify a different branding. And yes, the lyrics are less obviously silly than "big black boots" etc. Dunno whether it will have the staying power that most NIN records have, but I'm appreciating it at the moment. I was listening to it in a communal area, and someone asked me to turn it off because it made them feel "uneasy, as if they were in a dimly lit corridor", which reaction I was pleased with.

During his online radio show ‘Dark Matter,’ the axeman used the platform to rail against Avery’s recent move and past actions.
In the radio segment [via Grunge Report], Navarro ranted, “I’m looking forward to the 12-hour YouTube session of him dishing the dirt on why. ‘Once again I am mesmerized by my inability to follow through with anything.’”
Opening up further, he explained, “This guy has constantly talked s— about me, Stephen [Perkins] and Perry [Farrell], and quit our band twice to quote unquote, pursue all of these really intense solo creative artistic output. All these different mediums that he’s going to, get into or whatever, where is it? Where’s all the s— that he’s doing? I don’t know. I wouldn’t be so vocal about it if he didn’t do a feature length film talking s— about all three of us.”
Adding to his rant, Navarro stated, “He quits Jane’s. He got thrown out of Garbage, he got rehired by Garbage, he’s in Nails, now he’s out of Nails. I mean, what the f— is the problem here? You know what I mean? Me, Perk and Perry have managed to put everything aside for 30 years.”
He concluded, “The guy’s entitled to do whatever the f— he wants to do, and it’s fine, but keep your f—ing mouth shut. I don’t really care. You can quite every band in the world … Here’s the thing. I’m talking mad s—. The reason why is he opened the door. He opened the door with the feature length film, he goes to people that I know and work with in the music business to talk s— about me and Stephen. He talks to people who work at musical equipment manufacturers, like that s—’s not going to get back to us? Come on. It’s just p—y s—, whatever.”
Cooling off a bit, Navarro concluded, “I don’t wish him any harm. I have a lot of fond memories with him. But if you’re going to f—ing open your mouth about the inner workings and dynamics of something that has been very, very good to you for a lot of years, and then not follow through on anything else, you’ve got it coming.”

Liddy Buck is a definite WHA? although it wouldn't surprise me if he listens to NIN, he's weird that way. Pino, however, is a session player legend, so like Freese he eventually ends up playing with everyone. I get what you mean about Adrian but it's just that - to me - I cannot see him in the kind of atmosphere a NIN show creates.
Okay so there was this nagging voice in my head about CBH and I finally realized it's that it reminds me of "Only" because it's like Trent is recursively quoting himself again and that's his thing and all BUT while the former is clever (because I say it is) the latter strikes me as tired, and part of the reason is it is seriously lacking a dynamic arrangement, which is what we expect from NIN. B makes a good point about the first single tending to be an unfortunate choice (on purpose, maybe?) and I really hope this is the case because I can't take a whole album of halfassed NIN.
The video...now I love DL, y'all know I do but it's like he's trying to make us have a seizure and while I wouldn't discount that as an artistic statement and all, it's entirely the wrong song to set it to. So yeah, it comes off badly and I don't blame all those who are trashing it.

yeah the thing about the video is I get that it's Lynch and thus supposed to be super artsy but I can't even watch it to attempt to enjoy the artsyness because it makes my brain hurt.
I can definitely see that he was trying to visually capture the feel of the song with the strobe lights but it is just too much. I was thinking Lynch should stick to movies but then it occurred to me that I can't think of anything he's done that has been really good since Mulholland Drive :(

Agreed, r00! Non-Entity was amazing beyond just about any of the other WITHUH-TEETHUH! songs on the album. Don't get me wrong, I loved the rest of WITHUH-TEETHUH! too (even if it's hit or miss with a lot of fans), but Non-Entity sounded a lot different from the rest of the album -- as if it were going in a different direction, or with a different concept... which I guess is why it wasn't on the album.
In regards to the new single, uhh... It's okay? I guess. It doesn't sound like NIN; maybe it just needs to grow on me like some songs of his do, but I feel like there are some very basic 'meh' components to the fundamentals of the song. It SOUNDS frantic and disjointed, but not in the enjoyable manner that, say... March of the Pigs happens to be.
I literally felt like this could have been any band but NIN.

This is the downside of going back to a major label. I'm pretty sure he lost his rights to charge reasonable prices for things again in exchange for the distribution and marketing deal he got. I've seen other bands in the past who had their own store on their site get asked "why are the prices so bloody high", and if they answer at all, the answer is usually something along the lines of "the label makes us do that so we aren't in competition with ourselves at record stores".

I've been listening to it on the livestream on the guardian site. I like it, though The Slip excepted, there isn't a NIN album I haven't liked on release.
Not sure if I need to spoiler, but erring on the side of caution.

The first half of the album is strong. The motivic development is very NIN, and there are hooks that remind us of past songs, slipped in every so often without dominating. The soundworld is different, though, and the formulaic loud-LOUDER-loud-LOUDER-loud-LOUDER-veryquietpianoandhushedwhispering-LOUDER pattern is resisted. Everything is a weak track. Too many tracks after it sound muddy, which hopefully is the stream mix and will be better on the proper version. I can't help thinking there's too much variety on the album, though. Trent's strongest albums have exploited a particular dynamic to create a consistent feel, generating an intensity that allows him to explore and exhaust the range of nuances available within that dynamic. I would have preferred him to take the feel of Copy of A and explore that over a whole album. I'm glad to have this album as it is, I just feel it could have been better.[/spoiler]

I've listened to it several times in the past few days and I just feel like he didn't put enough effort into it :( remember the lead up to Year Zero? fuck that was excellent. I'm sure most of these songs will sound better live (maybe the next tour will be more affordable?) but either way it just feels so thrown together.

The lead up to Year Zero was excellent. It generated so much excitement that I think I enjoyed the album more than it was worth! For me, there are few tracks on that album that stand up now. In contrast, With Teeth has grown on me. I still think there are weak tracks on it (Sunspots, Getting Smaller), but there's less than half of Year Zero I'm bothered about now. Maybe I'm wrong, but I reckon I'll feel about this album how I feel about With Teeth in a few years' time.

After listening to the monologue-disguised-as-an-interview I'm willing to give it a bit of my time, it's just that those first two songs disappointed me greatly. I don't think anything could come close to Year Zero that he will ever do again, frankly, but that's okay. But W_T didn't really age well with me, I liked it much more when it first came out, now I can't really be bothered with it save a few songs. But I can listen to The Fragile and Year Zero anytime I crave being a NINnie again.

Mr. G told me a few years back that mastering engineers generally have to turn their backs on common sense if they want to remain in business OR somehow convince their clients with a bit of sleight-of-hand that they've compressed something more than they actually have (or the third option of getting them to realize the current aesthetic is a bad idea). He said that's why he always has the same clients when it comes to mastering assignments, the ones who know that he won't add "extra cheese" and they either have to accept that or find someone else.
Sometimes pushing the limits can work, like with the first RATM album, which is generally cited as the first time a master was almost punishingly loud with total in-your-face dynamics, and of course that was Bob too. Unfortunately, it started several trends, and brickwalling was one of them because you had lesser engineers not really getting the point of what Bob did with that record.

I finally gave the new album couple of good listens straight through and I have to say it is a winner for me. It is nice and minimalized for the most part and the production is stellar.
"Everything" is still a truly awful song, but the rest of the album receives thumbs up from me. It's not a gamechanger, but it is continuing the feel that I loved about The Social Network and HTDA (minus the female vocals... I like those songs instrumentally). Minimal beets, subtle, layered sound, and lots of space in between.
After a listen on the headphones, I put it through my mixer, sub and studio monitors and it sounded even better. I definitely can't complain about this one... and I am so happy for that fact.
(I have yet to listen to the "audiophile" version.)

I just got Hesitation Marks the other day, so I'll put in my two cents.
I like this a lot. To me, it seems like if With_Teeth had a depth of production approaching The Downward Spiral or The Fragile. There's a lot of interesting, layered sound design going on in support of legitimately tuneful songs (tunefulness being something I felt was sorely missing from The Slip and, obviously, Ghosts). I like the second half of the record quite a bit (it reminds me of the back half of W_T), and I think that even "Everything" isn't totally irredeemable (the verses are pretty dire, but I like the wall-of-static guitars surrounding the chorus.)
If I thought about this some more, I could maybe come up with some theory about how With_Teeth and Hesitation Marks are paired as eclectic, relatively upbeat contributions to the NIN catalog, and how that relates to the fact that both came after a period where Trent hung up the NIN moniker while he made significant positive changes to his personal life (i.e., getting sober, starting a family).
I guess the only thing I'm baffled about is how the hell Todd Rundgren got tapped for a remix. Oneohtrix Point Never and Genesis P-Orridge I understand, but Rundgren is perplexing.

I don't like all of the album but I do like most of it. I still can't stand "Came Back Haunted" and "Everything." They both almost qualify as parody for different reasons. But I like the rumpshakers, I like the wall of noise, I like the HTDA-type stuff. I think...rynne, didn't you say that you disliked The Fragile for the lyrics? That's how I feel about this album, most of the lyrics are not doing it for me, but the music and the production values are a good distraction from that problem. This album does have a great mix even if the "normal" mastering is painful at times. Moulder makes great use of headspace with this one. I don't see myself listening to the entire album over time, but some tracks, like "Find My Way," "Satellite" and "I Would For You" will definitely get replayed. But most of the songs are too long and they don't wrap up well, from an arrangement perspective.
I had a moment of listening to "Disappointed" and thinking, "Why is he singing like the Diva Cornell?" :op
My favorite track, for now, is "In Two." It's kind of a mess, but in that way Trent has of letting things be messy and yet still compelling.

If you don't mind me asking, chim, could you elaborate on what isn't working for you with the lyrics? I'm interested to know what's rubbing you the wrong way on this one vis-à-vis Trent's normal writing.
As far as The Fragile goes, yes, the lyrics really annoyed the shit out of me---way too self-pityingly whiny for my taste. That being said, I suspect that part of the reason that the lyrics really struck me as awful was that, for whatever reason, the music/production never quite clicked for me. I can be a lot more forgiving about lyrics when Trent strikes the right musical balance of tunefulness and noise.

I realize that this is really just more of the same, because you're a smart guy and you know this already.
Maybe it's his delivery, his voice has not necessarily aged well (unless he makes the effort), maybe the more low-key arrangements, and the lyrics don't merely provide yet another texture, they are right there in the middle of it and they annoy me.
For example, I think "Came Back Haunted" had the potential of being a creepy thing, but not with that track. Came Back Haunted? More like, Came back wanting to kill it where it stands. But "Everything" contains a verse which is surely one of his most trite and overused tropes ever, and the track is just insult to sonic injury.
"Satellite" is also a trope and yet, because it works with the music it's fine, I'm fine shaking my big white ass to it. Same thing with "In Two" which is very NIN, and that's not usually a compliment but it is in this case. Trent can do whatever he likes, of course, but nobody does Trent like Trent (and we all know who the imitators are).
And finally, listen to "While I'm Still Here" and then go listen to the PF track "Two Suns in the Sunset." There's a connection there, and it's probably coincidental but Trent mines his own emotions in the same way Roger does.

I totally get this now, having listened to the two back-to-back. The main difference to me is that W_T is mainly homogenized as an attempt to reconnect with the public, whereas HT is a much more interesting record which contains stylistic quotations from every phrase of his career. Also a great deal of his musical preferences. For example, there is so much Prince on this record and if that's got anyone saying WTF? then I say you haven't listened to enough Prince to know what I mean.
But yeah, the parallels are so obvious now. Like those stylistic left turns? Remember our epic debates about All The LULZ in the World and Nine Inch Foo and WITHA_TAMBOURINEA? The same thing is happening on this record, the only difference is that "Everything" is not a good song. I'm fine with Trent being happy because even happy Trent is still Trent. This is why using Tardar's face in that photo is so appropriate (on the FB page). It doesn't matter how he feels inside, he's always going to express it in some noisy way. It's better for him to make a record which is all over the place because it's still him. Honestly, making a rock record now would be beneath him.
But Trent likes to troll us - not in the lulz sense, but because I honestly believe he wants us to react to what he creates rather than just absorb it. And that's part of the reason why he makes those left turns which make us say WTF? He knows what we want and gives us just enough but then says, "Wait a minute...fuck all y'all, I'm supposed to be doing what I want." But he's not stupid - he's never been stupid, just weak. He knows this is a brand which he needs to protect. The evidence of his influences in that regard is very obvious. The reason that there is a visual stylistic continuity which he pays attention to as much as the music is because he has learned from the best in that respect.
So I've got a better appreciation for HT now, because it officially means that The Slip is his worst album and I'm okay with that. I'm not heartbroken anymore, but I will still skip over "Came Back Haunted" and "Everything" and "Running" like my finger is on fire.
And I still love "Sunspots." Fuck you haters. :P

I think the reason you're not liking "Everything" is because you're taking it seriously. Trent's said in interviews its a ridiculous song. I look at it like the equivalent of a South Park of music. The song is using all the pop tropes during the verses, and it sounds ridiculous. The choruses devolve into a barely functioning cacaphony with a semblance of a beat, and that's essentially what pop and pop-rock have become.
Listen to it as tongue-in-cheek, and the song starts to make a hell of a lot more sense.

Yeah I get that it's satire now (and even I thought so when I first heard it, like, "This is approaching parody.") but even so I don't want to listen to it. But other satirical moments I enjoy; it took me a while to realize he was parodying Manson in "God Given," for example.

Everything makes me like Getting Smaller. I don't think saying it's parody is fully saying what trent said about it. He said some of the lyrics were saracastic, but as for the full thing and the music? I really dunno. All i know is he doesn't play this one live… so, yeah. The best part of is the end. Overall, the album got better with subsequent listens but i haven't really listened to it since seeing that meh show. It wasn't a bad show. Just wasn't that great either.
Maybe I'm old and jaded now. I dunno.

I agree with him on a few things, like how the album is a better experience for headphones. He also makes the same point rynne did about hooks (which just goes to show how smart we all know N is). But then he takes this huge left turn and I'm a grown-up and all but I can't agree with his grown-up view of what Trent should be. Not that I disagree about the value of happy songs because I am a child of the 1970s, but because he doesn't really get what Trent represents. But this is why Moody wrote the review, the site is all about the juxtaposition of artistic viewpoints and not meant to be anyone attempting to explain and interpret someone for the rest of us.
Moody does raise an excellent point regarding the nature of "the truth." I think some artists do guard their own emotional truths as a subset of their right to privacy. It's all persona, we know this even as we don't want to discuss it or admit to it. And yet, Trent's persona is as much based on his assertions that he's been telling us the truth all along as it is on whatever actual "truth" he's managed to impart. I was thinking that his existing problem had to do with being happy and fulfilled and centered and yet...he'll look at a clear blue sky and spot the one cloud practically up in outer space. We can't see it, but he can. He's always a downer at the subterranean level. But I accept that it's likely just my own projection of not only myself, but what I have always perceived him to be, what I needed him to be in order to have that connection with his persona.
One of the reasons I appreciate Year Zero is that in the narrative you have any number of emotions expressed and because it's not Trent in his persona - it is the voice of the various characters - it is so incredibly effective and freeing for him and he can emote as the needs of the work dictate. I know y'all are tired of me banging on now about how he has become the Gen X version of Roger Waters but it is so true: that desire to tell big stories and act them out and create a persona which furthermore gives him permission to do so. When Trent is composing in regards to the persona, there's just shades of one emotional color dominating, and he's not being fair to his abilities to do so, and I think that is one of my issues with this album.
