one thing that irks the shit out of me---and I don't think revealing this is spoilery---is that Gandalf and Thorin's elvish swords don't glow. Okay, if it's supposed to be that Sting is the only sword that glows, fine. But it's clearly established through dialog that elvish swords glow and that Gandalf and Thorin have elvish swords. There's even a point where a goblin describes Gandalf's obivously-not-glowing-at-all blade as being "bright as day". Argh!

I'm glad that wasn't just me!

I also saw the 3D and 2D and I agree, there was nothing the 3D brought to the movie that made it necessary, in fact at some stages I'd completely forgotten it even was 3D!

Can't wait for Smaug.

I watched the Total Recall remake over the weekend.  The original has always been one of my favourites and I was massively obsessed with it when it came out...  to the point where one summer I think I watched it more days than I didn't.  So I know I am giving this flick more attention than it deserves, but that is why.

Comments (and spoilers):
[spoiler]--  No Mars???  WTF is this shit?  That made me sad.  If they could have at least incorporated something similar with the story on earth with a device that would clean the air or something, that would have been better.

--  I don't know if it had to do with the Phillip K. Dick tie, but visually the director owes a fuckton to Ridley Scott's Bladerunner.  From the rainy neo-Chinatown thing to the lighting, it was all straight out of the Bladerunner playbook.

--  I know the director is married to Kate Beckinsale, so I figure that is why they never killed her off until the very end of the movie versus her dying in sync with the original.  I just found it a bit annoying that she kept coming back like Karl in Die Hard.

-- The "two weeks" homage was great.

-- Having said all that,  the special effects were very well done and I liked the whole concept of the bee-line train system between the UK and Australia.  I also would have enjoyed the movie more if I hadn't seen the original a million times and had it so memorized.  It is a decent rental though and an enjoyable action movie to the point of the action overriding the actual story.[/spoiler]

finally got around to seeing Zodiac. While the movie was as good as a Fincher movie should be, it was incredibly frustrating to watch.

That was one of those movies that I felt like I only saw half of it by the time it ended.  Big build-up with no closure.

yeah. which it like the actual story of the Zodiac, but still. the closure was so subtle, it felt practically nonexistent. there was no real way to end that story. it would've been frustrating to make even.

I am resurrecting the movie thread to deliver a warning:

DO NOT SEE Now you See Me!

Turtle and I wasted 2 hours of our lives watching this the other night and it was truly awful.  I was tryign to find something recent to watch that we hadn't seen and this one seemed at first to hit the right criteria for me:

- magic.  check.  I love magicians and movies about them.
- group of magicians uses their talents to rob places.  awesome.  Oceans 11 with magicians.
- all star cast.  check.  I love most of these actors.
- above 50% rating on rottentomatoes with a 72% audience rating.  It definitely has at least a chance of being decent.

Unfortunately, the one thing I didnt research was the director.  If I had seen what movies he was responsible for before watching this, I would have never even tried.  8(

It really sucks.  It sucked so bad and in so many ways it made me resurrect this thread.
