Y'know what pisses me off? 4 y/o vent threads. New vent thread!
« on: February 18, 2017, 02:07:29 PM »
So this actually makes me pretty glad we're back here.  I'm a little tipsy, so please forgive if my spelling/grammar is off.

These days, my gainful employment is... basically QA for audiobooks.  I proof the audio to ensure that it matches the manuscript it's recorded from.  It's a pretty good gig, because my anxiety has kinda been out of control since... a while now, and this doesn't require leaving the house.  Hell, this doesn't require PANTS if I don't want it to.  It's great.

Except...

One of the primary narrators I work for is my father in law.  I charge him less because he's family.  Initially, I did the same for my cousin's husband.  The difference is that my cousin's husband started insisting on paying me more because of the quality of my work.  My father in law hasn't.  So while my base rate is up to $25 per finished hour, he's still paying me $10.  To be fair, I started at $15 and have bumped it up over time, but over the holidays I keep getting "I wish I could afford to pay you more," which is really frustrating, because I DO TOO.  At this point, all work I do for him is at a substantial loss because not only is it less than half my going rate, but he's the most error-prone narrator I do work for on the regular.

The more astute, or potentially experienced, will spot that my rate is per FINISHED hour, i.e. per hour of narration.  My better narrators deviate so little from the total run time that it's negligible.  Even a 12 hour book doesn't rack up enough time lost on notation to really be a quantifiable dent in my hourly rate.  My father in law, on the other hand, often winds up taking half-again the runtime when the time I spend on notation is figured in, bringing me basically down to minimum wage for his stuff.

Now I'm entrenched.  I can't really STOP doing work for him, or DEMAND he pay more, without causing some really uncomfortable drama. But the bigger problem is that right now, I'm the primary breadwinner, so this drag on my income is making an already challenging financial situation (freelancing ISN'T exactly full time unless you are either super lucky or way better at aggressive self promotion than I am) worse.

I'm not really looking for a solution--though if anyone has suggestions for an amenable resolution, I'll welcome ideas--I just needed to vent somewhere that it wouldn't wind up finding its way back to him.  And, as frustrating as THAT is, at least he pays me in a timely manner, unlike the full-service audio processor who's been subcontracting me the QA portion of her work and has an outstanding invoice that has been so since NOVEMBER.  If I weren't so hard up for work, I'd be refusing to work with her in the future because this isn't even just a one time thing--it's her MO.  Even though SHE expects to be paid within the month, she regularly makes ME wait 2+.

ETA: Also, I started this post last night while drinking, forgot that that was the case, and then posted it without combing over it because I'm still pre-coffee.  I am not day drinking.

I was going to say, your other posts last night had a noticable vibe to them.  If this hadn't been the start of a Vent thread, I'd be even more impressed if you were still drinking!  Honestly, a good bender is nice every now and then. ;)

Bummer about your Father-In-Law though.  Is he particularly trying to make a living as a narrator?  Can't your husband put his foot down and say, "C'mon Dad, you're not helping matters" at all?  Honestly, no one should be getting family discounts in the first place.  I'm sure you could imagine how I'd react in that kind of situation.  I really hate the idea that you're getting taken for a ride like that.
I assume I need no introduction.

That's the other half of the trouble.  Narration is his sole source of income.  My in-laws are a little older in spite of my husband only being 5 years my senior.  His folks are mid 60s to my folks' mid 50s.  His dad went from the Air Force to web design during the time before that bubble burst to ...  I don't actually know what he was doing from the burst til now, but suffice to say he's changed fields often due to said fields dying out.  He does some theatre stuff and is actually a member of SAG, so the narration is a logical fit for him, but I guess things are still a little nuts.  On the other hand, my mother in law was an ER nurse for years til she fell--in the ER, mind--and busted up her leg really badly.  After that, it was a lot of medical desk-job surfing, again getting displaced as companies pulled out of the medical game or got eaten by others.  I want to be sympathetic, and other than this one thing, my in laws are wonderful and I couldn't ask for better, but my husband has two modes where a confrontation with his dad is concerned and those are 1) butting heads like mountain goats or 2) the slow saunter away with a middle finger casually flung over the shoulder.  It just sums up into a quagmire of discomfort.

In other news, I will totally endeavor to take greater care when posting intoxicated.  I don't want to become that drunken shitposter.  I've gotten lazy about clarifying because I spend most of my online time in voice comms so I can walk back things that don't come out right more easily.  I'll make sure I use my words better going forward.

Aw, c'mon, you won't share?

Also, maybe I just didn't catch the crazy thread at the beginning enough, but I mostly remember goofy affectionate posting from you while drunk, absolutely not shitposting.

Okay, I'll take odd days, you get the even ones.

Which crazy thread?  When am I ever affectionate?!

Also, what if you comprimised with your FIL, and offer to do the recording of the narration with him, so that you can ensure quality without having to suffer the same bullshit errors over and over?  Maybe that'll be even more incentive to spend time with him, to help you open up about the disadvantage that he's putting you through.
I assume I need no introduction.

You're on!

Thread's not the right word, I think I codeswitched because we're back here.  The... chat thing.  That monstrous battery eating chat.  And not affectionate like drunken declarations of "I love you, man!" but like occasionally waxing philosophical about how great it is that we all still talk and whatnot.  Like I said, it could be a timeline issue, because it could be that those conversations preceded what you were writing off as having been drunk the night before, so I could be totally misattributing sincerity to alcohol, and if so, sorry about that

There are a couple of hitches there, though I totally appreciate your troubleshooting efforts.  The first is that audiobooks are weirdly solo projects.  Every narrator I've worked with has a studio ranging in size from closet to office that is completely soundproofed that they spend hours in alone recording.  My father in law's setup is one of the more closet-sized, so even if I had the ability to direct, it'd be cramped as all hell.  The other half though is that hubby's folks are about a 4 hour drive from us.  I don't know if Canadian provinces are more like American states or European countries in terms of how they view travel, but a 4 hour drive is usually considered a bit much to do on the regular.  Plus tolls and shit would absolutely break the bank.  NJ transit would love it though.

You may definitely be on to something about visiting more though.  Hubby doesn't see his friends from home much because it requires either us or them to make the aforementioned 4 hour drive, and none of us have really got the space to put each other up comfortably for the night, and we're all hitting the age where sleeping on the floor, while not something most of us would CONSCIOUSLY object to, we'd probably pay for it in the morning more than we'd like to admit.  I learned that one the hard way about a month ago and I'm pretty annoyed with myself for it.

You really don't need to apologize for anything, dude!  I'm kidding about not being affectionate; I do love you man!  Though my memory about anything while I'm shitfaced is pretty much like having retrograde amnesia.  I'll go to work with a nice hangover, and by the end of the day I really have to think hard about how my day went.  It's fun!

4 hours American = 4 hours Canadian, last time I checked. :p

Well, if only to try resolving the situation with the FIL.  Nobody is helping anyone if everyone's broke all the time.
