Finally saw League of Extraordinary Gentlemen last night. The lit geek in me was fawning over the meta-text the entire time, but I enjoyed it for the story, too. Moore's portrayal (well, the adaptation, I've never read the graphic novel) of the characters was great. Casting, too. Can't imagine anyone but Connery playing Quatermain the way that character is written.

But it's the GOOD kind of bad :P The kind that's fun to watch just because. I shall make a note to keep my eyes peeled for the graphic novel in my travels. Being able to snag it from the library would be a definite plus, but the one closest to me has a pretty poor selection of graphic novels (then again, to my experience, many libraries are still only beginning to carry them, so I should probably shut up).

and in terms of how well they adapted the comic, holy fuck did they ever do an amazing job.

I have never read the comics which is probably why the whole butchering bothered me so much. Like a friend of mine said, once you get used to Valhalla looking like a gay disco dance on steroids the movie is good.

I have a friend who is very into the Norse mythology and had also read the comicbook. She was surprisingly less hostile after seeing it than I ever would have expected, though I'm guessing that comes from the same place as Teeps's glowing review. Unfortunately for me, I have a greater familiarity with the Norse mythology than with the comicbook, so I don't suspect I'll be seeing the movie til we run out of other things to Netflix if it was as abusive of the root mythos as all that.
The idea of "Valhalla looking like a gay disco dance on steroids," while an incredibly amusing mental image, is pretty disturbing from the whole mythology perspective >.>;

asgard on the other hand was in the movie, and that wasn't a gay disco either.
it looked like a less pussified lotr set.

the film is so good.
drop your notions of the norse you know and just enjoy one of the best brannagh films in ages.

Valhalla or Valhöll is the hall of the gods and it is in Asgard or Ásgarður, so you can't really have one without the other. It is supposed to be Odin's place. If you die in battle the valkyres come riding down on their horses and get you and you get a resting place in Valhalla where you eat, drink and fight all day.
As for the gay disco thing, my friend isn't exactly known for being subtle. It was too much glitter and not enough viking.
But hey I'm as biased as you can get on this one. ;)

okay, in the comics it says:
Valhalla - Realm of the honored dead and is a distinct region on the Asgard planetoid.
which leads to two very interesting facts about the comics.
1) these gods are still "in progress" and their stories are not yet over. so odin isn't dead yet... but once he will die, and thor (and they have, but it's comics so they always come back) they wind up in the Valhalla section of Asgard where they can act like it's a 24 hour fightclub/buffet/bar. ie where i wanna go when i die.
2) these gods aren't so much gods... as they are alien creatures which resemble the traditional norse gods...
so yes, norse mythology and marvel mythology can co-exist if you think of it that way. : p
and i wanna go again and see it next week because i loved it that much.

1) Valhöll is a house, not a section of Ásgarður per se so that makes no sense. It is where Odin lives and rules Ásgarður, like Thor's house is called Bilskirnir. I can't remember if there are any other gods that live in Valhalla besides Odin and Frigg, his wife. A large part of it is a big party/dining hall for the Einherjar (dead warrior vikings).
2) I find that easier to accept that the first part, an alien race that stole their looks and names from the norse gods. :p
The movie itself was good, like I said earlier, once I got past the "what the fuck are they doing" part.

1) The hammer fly thing is marvel mythology. In norse mythology Thor flies in a chariot pulled by two goats that he eats occasionally when he is hungry. I don't think mythology is supposed to make much sense anyway.

Saw Brides Maids with the Farrier last night. It's actually INCREDIBLY good -- and barely even a chick flick.
In fact, it was so hilarious, I literally slapped my knee a few times while watching.
Go see it.

I haven't seen Thor yet, but I am concerned by reports that it isn't historically accurate.
Did watch Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS, The Beast in Heat, and Deja Vu recently.
Ilsa was self-aware, witty and entertaining. Thoroughly recommend to anyone who's even just a little bit twisted.
The Beast in Heat was just unpleasant (and for the most part, not in a good way), with only two laugh-out-loud moments. I was however impressed with the lack of budget, with old black and white war stock film interspersed with newly-shot colour footage, so you would see a grenade thrown in colour, then the scene would cut away and you would see the resultant explosion in black and white. The film was dubbed into English then overdubbed back into Italian, for seemingly no good reason, meaning it was very difficult to understand anything any of the characters said. Fortunately dialogue wasn't essential to the plot.
Deja Vu was only redeemed by the ever-reliable and watchable Denzel Washington. The first 45 minutes was badly paced, boring, and the director's habit of using shots and camera movements that were supposed to be cool distracted from anything good that might have been happening. Then in the space of two minutes, an utterly unbelievable (I tried really hard to suspend disbelief, but it didn't work) twist based on science more obviously phoney than the "science bits" in shampoo commercials lurched the film into some kind of belated momentum, at the cost of all credibility. Then we were supposed to believe Denzel fell in love with someone by watching video of someone who was already dead go about their everyday business, and see it as sweet and romantic rather than as creepy stalkerish voyeuristic necrophilia. The product of all that is a film that can only be described as woeful.

FINALLY saw Watchmen. Feel like overall it was handled pretty well, casting was pretty good, and nothing that got lost to the cutting process was super glaringly obvious (bearing in mind that it has been a few years since I read the graphic novel). The way people kept going on about Big Blue Dong, I was expecting a lot more gratuitous blue-nudity than there was though
Was also amused that Molloch and Stewart are played by actors from Eureka!, and that they're the only ones I readily recognized :lol:

finally watched 'the girl with the dragon tattoo', 'the girl who played with fire', and 'the girl who kicked the hornet's nest'... or as i like to call them 'girl who was in a bunch of movies with horrible fan-made subtitles'... pirating stuff is great, but wow sometimes it fails...
having said that, the films were enjoyable... the last two kinda dragged... like a lot.
really can't wait to see what fincher and trezzy does with it.

Another great low budget movie I can recommend that is sort of along those lines is Mosters. It was a real pleasant surprise to watch. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. Very aesthetically pleasing.

Just watched Man On Fire I liked it. The ending kinda bugged me. But I liked it. It was also a slow start. However, after finishing the movie. It was just right. So, all in all. A very good movie.
Priest The Matrix and Vampires is pretty much what it is. I LOVED the idea. LOVED it. However, getting it on film kinda shitty. If you watch it thinking B-movie, it will be just right.
The Mechanic Good solid action movie. Mindless, more or less just shit blowing up, or people getting fucked up. Worth a watch. Just don't expect much out of it...

Watched a couple of movies over the weekend:
True Grit (2010) -- I enjoyed it for sure, but not as much as I was expecting to. What's with the lack of contractions in the dialogue of that movie? Is that supposed to be how people really spoke during that time?
Limitless -- I really really liked this movie. I don't remember it being in theaters, but it is definitely worth checking out. Bradley Cooper is a serious bromance for me at this point. 8-p

Yeah I like those too. Actually my company just picked up one of those to release over here, it's called Evidence. I had to disc check the screener for it yesterday, it starts off making you think it's going to rip off Blair Witch - the main focus of the plot is four friends go camping whilst making a documentary - but it moves into a whole different direction as soon as the encounters start.

Went and saw Bridesmaids last night. Definitely not as good as the reviews were making it out to be. Kristin Wiig can really be annoying as hell sometimes. Once you got about 35% of the way through, it really picked up, but that first bit was just bad.
Nice to see Chris O'Dowd getting some decent screen time though. He was by far the funniest thing about Dinner for Schmucks as well, even if he was only on screen for a few minutes. Hopefully it'll cause more people to look into The IT Crowd as well.

There was just nothing new to present within the film. Nothing I havent seen before, and/or done better.
I wanted to like it, and it fell through.
Stand By Me or E.T. meets Cloverfield.
The kids can make you laugh at times but once everything is revealed in the film,
I just found myself waiting for it to be over.
and I felt no real replay value from the film.
The monster did look decent though. That is all.

Speilberg's just a producer, one of many, meaning he had jack shit to actually do with it other than allow them to slap his name on it for a cut of the profits. JJ Abrams wrote and directed it.

To be perfectly honest, I've always thought that about JJ Abrams style as a whole, and given that Spielberg is slowing down his output in his later years (or just putting out crap), I don't find that a bad thing at all.

I've been watching Benny Chan's Shaolin, which has absolutely incredible performances by Nicholas Tse and Andy Lau, not to mention stunning action from Wu Jing, Yanneng, Jackie Chan & Xing Xing. It's nice to see a Chinese martial arts film actually put as much effort into the storyline and flow instead of just the martial arts.

I used to watch a lot of Cronenberg, but after the awesome indie video store in my town (with its totally badass Cult section) shut down I haven't been able to seen nearly as much. I don't think I realized eXistenZ even was a Cronenberg film until a few years ago.

The whole feel of the movie just feels so fresh and well done.

Tree of Life is artsy-fartsy as FUCK. I don't know how else to put it, but once you sift through some of that nonsense, theres some good film in there. It LOOKS gorgeous, great camera shots, lighting, Brad Pitt does a great job,etc., but its not really a movie I'd want to see over and over again.
I can't RAVE over it, and I mean it is Terrence Mallick, but at least the film is presenting something that feels fresh, though its probably not for everyone.

Saw Catfish and thought it was a waste of time. It doesn't tell you anything you haven't already thought about yourself and it's nothing new; people have been faking identities on the net a long long time, I'm sure we've all encountered people who used fake names, backgrounds and pictures.

So, my turn to finally see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo... ??? Movie was BRUTAL. Maybe it's just that my higher reasoning and brain activity are still recovering from being thrown full tilt into the last month of a school year with no preparation and no work left to ease the transition, but I was on edge that entire film. Every thought I had was completely wrong. I didn't expect a damn thing. Fantastic writing. Brutal, but god damn.
The ending is probably the only reason I'll be able to sleep after watching it. Yes, I am a big goddamn baby, why do you ask? :hmm:

I watched Attack the Block at a community cinema the other day - suprisingly entertaining, and Island of Death in my quest to watch all the banned films on the video nasty list of the 80s the other night. Island of Death is surprisingly watchable - problematic in many ways, but good value. Some hilariously wtf scenes.

We watched Source Code last night. Duncan Jones (Bowie Jr.) has made another good movie. I didn't enjoy it as much as Moon, but it's a great movie nonetheless. Jake Gyllenhaal is solid as always.

Forgot to mention that I watched Possession - which was excellent if patchy. Recommend to anyone who's ever wondered what the lovechild of Dario Argento and David Lynch might've produced if they went back in time to the late 70s.

For lack of anything better to do, watched Ironman 2 the other night as we waited for the in-laws and step-kiddo to arrive. PLEASE DON'T SHOOT I HAVEN'T READ THE BLOODY COMIC! Mostly I was just upset that Tony and Nat-asha/alie never did anything. Robert Downey Jr. + Scarly Jo? Yes please! ;) No, I can't tell you why I like him. Beloved found him rather incongruous with my usual tastes. I just do. It was a decent time killer, but I think some elements of history must have translated kind of poorly from page to screen. It just felt shoe-horned in some places.

I watched a screener for a movie last night called Panic Button, not sure if any of you know this one, but it's a horror/thriller based on the unseen consequences of social networking, identity theft etc. It was actually a really good effort for a low budget film and they seem to be trying hard by making spoof sites of the in-movie social networking site www.all2gethr.com (though unlike a lot of this type of online marketing, it's very tongue-in-cheek).

Watched Skyline last night... found it unimpressive. I was much angrier at the end of it, but I've cooled off. I get what they were trying to do; it's an alien invasion from the perspective of Normal People. No reason for the invasion is ever given, or even hinted at. This is a fairly large part of my objection to the movie. Another complaint stems from the fact that, if I wanted to see Normal People, I'd go to the mall or something. I'd probably care about as much about the random strangers there as I did about the characters in the movie. And, of course, [spoiler]in the end, the one guy who got blasted with the blue light twice without getting beamed away manages to take over one of the aliens' weird harvester robots to save the day, but[/spoiler] the movie ends before anything really comes of it.
It had potential. It really COULD have been a good alien movie, while still taking a different path. They just didn't quite get it right.

It had potential. It really COULD have been a good alien movie, while still taking a different path. They just didn't quite get it right.

I went and saw Super 8 the weekend before and loved it as I figured I would. I keep waiting for JJ to create something I don't enjoy. I definitely saw 3 short shots in that film that were direct takes from Goonies, E.T., and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

So the fantasia film festival happened. 3 weeks of geek genre cinema. Caught a whole bunch of stuff. Here's some highlights:
-World premiere of Final Destination 5.
Enjoyable. Some thrilling kills. A lot of ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh moments. And it's got a clever ending.
I felt there was a little too much of a boring subplot in there involving the couple, but the gore more than made up for it. Overall, I like the 2nd and 4th ones the best, but this was a lot of fun. Especially in a packed house and in 3D -- which the film was actually shot in.
I hate 3D unless it does what it does best. Gimmicky gorey horror.

Really creepy flick. At it's core it's like one of those grimm fairly tales about a little girl and little tiny monsters in the dark.
Guillermo del Toro was supposed to be in attendance (he wrote and produced this flick). He couldn't make it because he was fat and sick. His own words. Instead we got Ryder Strong(?!?!) who directed and wrote the short which aired beforehand.
That was kinda funny because for the past few couple of years people have told me this old ID photo of mine looked like Ryder Strong, so I always viewed him as my evil doppelganger. Anyhoo, his short was fun.
-It was called "The Dungeon Master" and it's about a bunch of hipsters wanting to play D&D after years of not playing it... and thus seeking the aid of a weird DM... and weird shit happens.
I could easily see this becoming a series or something. A lot of potential for lolz.
-Also saw Bangkok Knockout! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1770650/) Holy fuck. Some of the worst acting and dialogue ever, but holy fuck, easily the BEST action and stuntwork ever. this shit raises the bar. so much insane thai martial arts going on. seeing this must have been what western audiences watching Enter the Dragon must have felt like. Insane shit. Felt like I was watching a Mortal Kombat game or something. So fucking rad. Download this now. Insane.
-Saw the director's cut of Takashi Miike13 Assassins (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1436045/). Wow. Slow burn at the begining, but the final hour is like non-stop Samurai goodness. Think 300 but end of feudal Japan. And with less over the top Zack Snyderness. Plenty of carnage, though. Some good performances. And solid story. You really feel for these guys. And it's fucking Takashi Miike so you know you're in for a ride.
-Fans of the original pagantastic Wicker Man will be interested in checking out the kinda-sorta-sequel The Wicker Tree (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0323808/). This one's more of a comedy than the original (which was also a black comedy of sorts, according to the director, but I feel it was more understated), and it's no where near as epic, but it's cool seeing Robin Hardy still make films with some bite. It's based on Hardy's book COWBOYS FOR CHRIST. How do you now wanna see that now? Exactly. Like I said, not as good as Wicker Man... but still miles better than that horrid nick cage piece of shit remake.
-Theatre Bizarre (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1763316/) is a real fun horror anthology full of WTFness and gore. I got to meet the legendary gore-master Tom Savini and the übercool Richard Stanley (they both directed segments in this flick) and Udo Kier(!). How cool is that? Yes. Very. Oddly enough, Ogre was supposed to be in this film, but they sacked him for Udo. I found out about this the next day at the Q&A when I asked about Ogre... which led to a few awkward moments... especially since Udo didn't know someone else was cast. Whroooops. :lol: Worth checking out. Nice mixed bag of strangeness.

And holy fuck it's funny. It does what the watchmen and kick-ass films failed to do. And since it doesn't have source material, it doesn't rape said source material. brilliant. Yeah, it's not based on a comic, BUT it's kinda inspired by comics in general in the whole realm of HOW DOES THIS SHIT WORK IN THE REAL WORLD, OH FUCK, IT DOESN'T? And that's why it's the best comicbook film ever.
Fucking awesome. Fucking wrong. Fucking dark. Also Ellen Page diddles herself and kinda rapes a dude. Yeah. Oh, and NATHAN CAPTAIN TIGHTPANTS Fillion has a cameo too.
Seriously, even if you hate comics, you will love this film. it's just sooo fucking bizarre.

thanks to a friend, I've recently become a sucker for the Fast and Furious movies. I've never seen any of them, and with Fast Five coming out in May, my friend forced me to watch all 4 of them so we can catch 5 in the theatres when it came out. I'm glad I did, I really ended up enjoying them, just bought them all on blu ray actually..and I think Fast Five may have been the movie of the summer.

I'm still baffled that he took perhaps the most greatest moments of jedi -- vader looking at luke silently and then proceeding to head down the path of redemption and stopping the emperor -- AND ADDED ANOTHER RIDICULOUS "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".
The reason that scene worked was because it didn't need any dialogue. David Prowse did all the acting that needed to be done while wearing that damn suit. that takes skill. and it's all ruined because lucas doesn't know to say "when".
and this is why star wars has been dead to me for a number of years.

I was reading an interview with Noel Gallagher where he was listing albums and movies that influenced him. He talked about seeing Star Wars when he was 10 and how fantastic is was, but made sure we knew he was referencing the original version.

We watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes over the weekend. It was so fucking fantastic, I can't wait to watch it again. I have always been a big fan of the originals and was so disappointed by Burton's reboot of the first, (why the hell he took a major premise like humans not talking and made them talk still boggles my mind) that I was a bit cautious about this one. Once I saw the decent reviews coming in, I decided to give it a chance.
Best movie from this summer that I have seen yet. Seriously check it out. Serkis was phenomenal yet again.

this adaptation is amazing. it really feels like its own film and not just a remake, or an adaptation. i think fincher has a good knack for that kind of thing. the violence is cringe-worthy yet not overdone or blown out of proportion. it was good to see a movie that actually had me excited when things were supposed to be exciting and disgusted when the content called for that too. trent did a really good job at sewing his score around fincher's vision, and it really put everything in its place to set off whatever was happening visually. rooney mara's transformation is really impressive, and her portrayal is extremely convincing.
i give this film a strong A, and recommend it entirely.

It's a documentary on Netflix. It takes place on July 24th, 2010 and it's footage from all over the world of tiny slices of life. Some happy, some sad. It's really interesting to see all of these different walks of life within the time frame of a single day.

Whilst I believe what you say and it probably won't affect my watching it (I will by the way, I loved the originals), did it really need a remake? It always just seems like a way of cashing in on the people who refuse to watch a subtitled movie at the cinema - and good or bad, a remake in the English language will make a tremendous amount more than any original in a forgeign language, sad fact of my work.

I probably have a bias to this because after reading the book, I watched the American version and then the original. That being said, I connected with the american versions characters more. A remake probably wasn't necessary, and it rarely ever is, but the film is in existence now, and from the music, to the actors, and the director I found the American version stronger, probably because there was a bigger budget.
Let the right one in and let me in come to mind. I watched both and like both for different reasons. The minor details and casting. How certain scenes were shot, etc.
It really just comes down to preference.
Oh, and that's awesome, individual. I do remember that clip.

I just watched Contagion. And while I thought the idea and story was a great thing. It seamed kinda lacking... It was a good movie, but it wasn't a GREAT movie. It's worth a watch though. The whole pandemic thing is a good movie villain, and with as interconnected as we are now it works really well.

I watched Conan O'Brien Can't Stop on netflix the other day. I really enjoyed it. I was happy it was a documentary about his tour and not just a recording of the performance. That guy was worn down and crazy by the end of the whole thing. His personal assistant must be some kind of saint. Definitely watch this if you enjoy Conan.

I think it probably will, I just need to keep my eyes open. I was only trying people at Sony because we have all our films replicated by them and have very good relations with our contacts there, but it's proving difficult! I saw footage for it a while back before I knew it was Sony and tried to get our company to buy it!

this wasn't an iron-man sequel, or a thor sequel, or a cap sequel, or a hulk sequel. this was an avengers movie. it tied everything together. everything.
utter and complete awe. he managed to tie in stuff that adapted the basic beats of the comics without isolating non-comicbook fans.
he adapted it proper.
this made up for the anticapointment of watchmen, and shitfests of the fantastic four movies, x3, and spidey 3.
give whedon the keys to the castle because he fucking knows what he's doing.
holy fucking shit. gotta see it again and again and again.

It was my understanding that was a slur from the studio upon Norton after the financial negotiations fell through and they decided to about-turn on his invitation to join the ensemble cast. He's well known for being strongly opinionated, but he would never have been extended the invitation in the first place if he truly couldn't play well with others.

The Raid: Redemption is quite possibly the best Asian action movie I have seen in a very, very long time, so far I've been to see it 4 times and I'm still in awe at just how well executed it was, it's not very often a movie of this calibur just falls out of nowhere, not to mention how I've never heard of Iko Uwais or Yuyan Ruhian before considering not only their excellence in martial arts, but also their skill in coreography - those fights in the hallway had a lot of weight and gravity.

i loved seeing a sci-fi movie in theaters that actually felt VERY sci-fi and on an epic scale. everything looks crisp. the story to fill in the gaps made a lot of sense to me, and really made me want to go back and watch Alien 1-3 again after knowing what i do.
the amount of sexual undertone in this series is almost hilarious, but besides that i thought the film had a lot of cool, traumatizing scenarios and it was done really well. i want to see it again, actually.
it had its "campy" moments, but what is sci-fi if it doesn't? they could've taken the violence futher in my opinion, but i give it a strong B.
i never trust 3D nowadays, and that sounds horrible for a double charge, i would've raged.

[spoiler]So the fact that the Space Jockey completely changed it's physiology since Alien wasn't a big deal to anyone then? They weren't humanoid with our DNA, that thing in the chair in Alien was a creature not a suit, they even state its ribcage has been blown through and you can quite clearly see that the 'helmet' is not a helmet but the creatures face, its bones go into its chest around the 'trunk'.
Then there's gaping plot holes where nobody apparently bats an eyelid, such as when Shaw beats off two crew members, has unauthorised surgery to extract an alien lifeform, leaves it in the fucking room, stumbles into a supposedly dead Weyland, his daughter and the Android and instead of wondering what the fuck this bloody, stapled woman that 5 seconds ago you wanted to freeze is doing, you instead just say, "hey, lets go see the cryotubes!".
Amongst other things that I just found plain dumb or insulting was the idea that at the end, Shaw and the androids head just zip off on a spare ship (?!?) in search of the origin. Awesome, lets fuck up the Alien franchise and throw in a ton of plot holes that apparently had no thought whatsoever and hint at a sequel in it's own franchise.
Ridely Scott might as well have been George Lucas making this movie as far as I'm concerned. The effects and the production was beautiful, but that's the only positive thing I can say about Prometheus. It felt like watching AVP all over again with the washy ancient civilisation links and then instead of a temple filled with Aliens and Predators, we've got the Derelict from LV426 (yes I know Promtheus landed on LV223). Hell, they even use the same "oh noes we're locked in the ship/temple all on our own" with the stereotypical moron who has far too much testosterone but turns into a pussy when it's actually time for any combat.
Ridley fucked up and he knows it, he's now comepletely about-turned on it being an Alien prequel, despie on several occassions saying it was (then wasn't again). I guess at least he'll stop flip-flopping now.
I'm genuinely concerned for his proposed Blade Runner sequel, I had so much faith in Scott before Prometheus.

So I got out of the movie and was like, "WTF, I thought Scott said this wasn't an Alien prequel, and it frickin' ends with the creation of the first xenomorph." But after thinking about it more, I think I understand what he means. I think that Prometheus doesn't set up Alien at all. I think it is an intimately related, but separate story.
The key is to look at Scott's conception of the Space Jockey from Alien. (As far as I'm concerned, the other films don't matter to this discussion because they're the visions of other directors.) Scott said that he thought the derelict Space Jockey ship in Alien was a warship and the xenomorph eggs were bioweapons. Incidentally, I'm pretty sure he's said before that what the Nostromo crew saw wasn't the Space Jockey itself but its suit, which matches Prometheus.
In Prometheus, we again see the Engineers with a potent bioweapon---the mutagenic black goo---that is related to but different than the xenomorphs. Perhaps the black goo is something that alters local fauna into xenomorph-type creatures (and thus may be the origin of the xenomorphs) or maybe it's somehow derived from the preexisting xenomorph species. Whatever it is, the Engineers seemingly store and transport it in the same manner as they do with facehugger eggs, which implies a simialr function.
However, the events in Prometheus are separate from Alien; the occurences in the former do not directly lead to the latter. The first indication of this is in the "tomb," where the bas reliefs clearly depict a xenomorph. Ergo, xenomorphs were well known to the Engineers when the facility was built 2000+ years ago, leaving literally millennia to account for the derelict that appears in Alien. The second is that none of the creatures in the film are xenomorphs as we know them. The creature at the end of the film was superficially similar, but was obviously different (e.g., it burst fully formed without going through a chestburster stage). What you're seeing in Prometheus is the chance creation of an alternate line of xenomorph-type creatures. It makes sense, I think.
That being said, I don't know why the biologist was all, "Oh hay an alien cobra I'm gonna pet you now."

I saw Prometheus in 3D over the weekend and loved it. It was visually beautiful and the best 3D I have seen since Avatar. Ridley Scott still has a great sense of ambiance and visual detail when it comes to sci-fi.

-To touch more on what Rynne was talking about... I saw the xenomorphs and their parasites as virii, but on a multicellular level. They are mutating with each infection at the same rate that a single cell virus does within an outbreak scenario.
- I loved the fact that it was a great standalone movie but also a prequel or sort. I found it fun picking out all the connections to the original Alien movie as I watched it.
- Everything from the crispness of the screens to the tech of the mapping drones, to the look of the ship Prometheus, to the lanscapes, to the acting and the Peter O'Toole bits and David 8 made me squee. It was just the kind of sci-fi flick that has been missing from the theaters for years now, IMO.
- One thing that made me give out a "bah" though... All that tech and they still have fuzzy non-HD, non-self stabilizing suit cams? :lol:

I have to strongly disagree. The original space jockey stands 26 feet tall. That's not something you can then scale down and pretend is a suit. Giger was brought on to the Alien project to handle all of the alien creature modelling and the LV426 environment. He designed the 'Space Jockey' as an alien creature (not a suit) and has been acknowledged as such by Scott. It was also designed by Giger as 'Pilot', not Space Jockey. I just feel like he pulled a George Lucas.

I want to see this bad. It's good that Ice-T directed this documentary too. A director that wasn't there at the beginning wouldn't do it justice and dig out some of the forgotten talent of that golden era.

I just streamed Jiro Dreams of Sushi from amazon. Great movie. While I do love me some sushi. I can't say I know to much about it. And it really shows a very in depth look at Jiro's life. And his two sons, and how much super hard work dude does. When I'm 85 (if I live that long...) I sure as hell don't want to be working.
Even if you don't really care for sushi. It's a kick ass film about a guy that worked his ass off to get where he is at. I really liked it.
I also plan on watching a lot more videos now... Well like documentaries and stuff.

Bought and watched Prometheus.
SPOILERS and stuffs.
I really liked it. I have a hard time watching movies and tv shows anymore. I get bored really easy with them. So if it keeps me hooked for the whole thing, I'm impressed. I found it odd how the Alien (not THE ALIEN) was what created up a long time ago. I also found the black ooze stuff odd. More or less I have a lot more questions about the whole Aliens movies and stuff then anything. It made me mad that the robot dude could speak to the Alien... However it didn't work to well for him. I thought the Alien being 9ish feet tall was cool.
All in all I like the movie. I went in expecting an aliens ish prequel movie.

Prometheus: So, it turns out that what David said to the Engineer, regarding Weyland, was something along the lines of "This man is here because he does not want to die. He believes you can give him more life". This apparently is what enrages the engineer, the scene was apparently longer than what made the final cut, expect a Directors Cut in the future. I still don't like it though :p
As a huge fan of the original 2000AD and Judge Dredd comic book, I have to say the new Dredd was just fucking awesome and finally someone has wiped away the blight that Stallone put upon the character so many years ago. Urban nailed Dredd even down to the Joe Dredd grimmace! I was amazed and really happy with what made it in from the comic, the lingo, the cityscape, rowdy 'Juves' and Block Gangs, Dredds different ammunition types (Hotshot fuck yes!), Dredd assessing Anderson and a girl who actually looked like Anderson! They did phenominally well with the budget they had. Thank you Urban for restoring my faith in movie Dredd.

A few days ago I saw Skyfall aka new Bond flick. In motherfucking IMAX (first time ever seeing a movie in Imax and also the first film I've seen since King Kong from 05... Ya... I don't go to the movies often... It might just be cuz the Ptown movie theater is shit. ) I'm not that big on Bond movies. Not really sure why, but I haven't every really been big on them. ANYHOO I liked it. I didn't think it was amazing, but it was good. The hot chick in the movie was hot. The bad guy was hella good at being bad? I was really impressed with some of the special effects they used on him. I don't want to give it away, but it was super awesome the make up they used on him. He played the roll really well. All in all the movie was good, however if you didn't know what/who James Bond was/is it would be an odd movie to see.
I also watched Wreck it Ralph. It took me awhile to care about any of the characters or the movie in general. But once I did it was a good movie. I wasn't blown away by it, but it's worth a watch.

i hear the imax version actually has more stuff on the screen than the standard widescreen release (kinda like nolan did with his bat films).

So I've seen The Hobbit twice now, once in 3D and once in 2D. Overall, pretty excellent (though I don't feel that I got more out of the 3D showing than the 2D). The 'Riddles in the Dark' sequence is fuckin' amazing; it's kinda silly to say, but Martin Freeman and Gollum give the two most expressive performances of the film. Yes, it goes on a bit long (too much Radagast for me, thanks) but I didn't feel it was the slog that some critics are making it out to be.
One thing that irks the shit out of me---and I don't think revealing this is spoilery---is that Gandalf and Thorin's elvish swords don't glow. Okay, if it's supposed to be that Sting is the only sword that glows, fine. But it's clearly established through dialog that elvish swords glow and that Gandalf and Thorin have elvish swords. There's even a point where a goblin describes Gandalf's obivously-not-glowing-at-all blade as being "bright as day". Argh!
On the other hand, Bret of Flight of the Conchords now gets to say more than one sentence. Huzzah!

I watched the Total Recall remake over the weekend. The original has always been one of my favourites and I was massively obsessed with it when it came out... to the point where one summer I think I watched it more days than I didn't. So I know I am giving this flick more attention than it deserves, but that is why.
Comments (and spoilers):
[spoiler]-- No Mars??? WTF is this shit? That made me sad. If they could have at least incorporated something similar with the story on earth with a device that would clean the air or something, that would have been better.
-- I don't know if it had to do with the Phillip K. Dick tie, but visually the director owes a fuckton to Ridley Scott's Bladerunner. From the rainy neo-Chinatown thing to the lighting, it was all straight out of the Bladerunner playbook.
-- I know the director is married to Kate Beckinsale, so I figure that is why they never killed her off until the very end of the movie versus her dying in sync with the original. I just found it a bit annoying that she kept coming back like Karl in Die Hard.
-- The "two weeks" homage was great.
-- Having said all that, the special effects were very well done and I liked the whole concept of the bee-line train system between the UK and Australia. I also would have enjoyed the movie more if I hadn't seen the original a million times and had it so memorized. It is a decent rental though and an enjoyable action movie to the point of the action overriding the actual story.[/spoiler]

Turtle and I wasted 2 hours of our lives watching this the other night and it was truly awful. I was tryign to find something recent to watch that we hadn't seen and this one seemed at first to hit the right criteria for me:
- magic. check. I love magicians and movies about them.
- group of magicians uses their talents to rob places. awesome. Oceans 11 with magicians.
- all star cast. check. I love most of these actors.
- above 50% rating on rottentomatoes with a 72% audience rating. It definitely has at least a chance of being decent.
Unfortunately, the one thing I didnt research was the director. If I had seen what movies he was responsible for before watching this, I would have never even tried. 8(
It really sucks. It sucked so bad and in so many ways it made me resurrect this thread.
