So Rift has a 7 day free trial thing now. Pretty sure r00 wanted this... EITHER way.

There is a link to the thing to try it out...

Have you tried it yet?  It is on my agenda for memorial day weekend.

Naw. I'm lvling alts right now in wow. And its seamed to have made the fun come back. (I have two 85's DK and Druid, both are boring...)

I have thought about it thought, but not knowing anyone that plays it would be kinda shitty. Since I'm playing with friends (meatspace and intarswebs or at lest wow friends.) The talent trees look crazy thought...

yeah, I kinda like that about it... the fact that there are no 3 cookie cutter specs for each class.  There are tons of directions to go with your character specialization.

Aaron ~ What spec is your druid that it's boring?!  0.0  I never got feral, but OMFG BOOMY IS SO MUCH FUN RIGHT NOW.  I luffs my laser chicken.

r00, I totally miss the old WoW talent trees.  Yesh, they were still cookie-cutter-ish, but, especially leveling, you did have some options.  My second prot pally started life as ret, just deep enough to get Seal of Command (yeah, back when that was a TALENT and made your attacks HIT TWO THINGS before prot had anything of the sort available), then into prot, then respec around 50 or so to pick up Sanc and the Captain America shield and regain the necessary ret talents at the end.

WoW is getting dumb.  If I don't start playing with friends again, there's a good chance I'll just end up quitting.

I lvled him as feral. Then when I hit 80 I got geared to do moonkin. Its not so much that its boring, just well... not new. Is really what it boils down to... I thought it was fun, (part of me wants to get him gear as a feral kitty. But I'm also having fun lvling my rouge... My main alt at the time.) Pretty much the same thing for my DK. SUPER fun at the start, then it became fun, then the same old same old... SO I'm lvling alts.  And right now, Rouge=HELLA fun.

Haha, my rogue's just short of 60 and I've been amusing myself by doing lockbox runs through LBRS to sell to Insane hunters.  It's not AMAZING gold, but one box is about 2/3 of what I'd get for doing a daily quest and MUCH more fun for me.

I haven't played a rogue since beta.  They are one of those classes whose dps seems to continually go from OP to totally nerfed and back again every other major patch.  Everyone will have a rogue and then suddenly they are all gone for a bit.

Warlock has always been my main and I still love them.  The other classes I play the most are my DK (unholy/blood) and a pally (just holy).  I love healing as a pally and nothing gathers compliments like being a good healer.  8)

You guys are fucking nerds :p
Title: Re: GAMING THREAD aka holy fuck, l.a. noire = ^_^
Post by: Naylzie on May 19, 2011, 09:33:45 AM
My first main was a lock.  Shelved her when 3.0 dropped in favor of the pally for a couple of reasons.  For one, I was still in the midst of transitioning her gear from shadow to fire damage so I could go from the shitty shadow-based noob destro to the well-geared high performance fire-based destro, but when the patch dropped, I was suddenly thrust into a rotation I hadn't had the time to learn on a freaking raid night.  I went from 3rd dps to second-to-last, but still above the tanks (thankfully).  The other thing that happened with 3.0 is that we lost two pallies at once; one who was ALWAYS prot, the other who fluctuated between all three as we needed.  The loss of the first was bad enough, but to lose both a main tank AND our switch put our raiding in jeopardy, so I volunteered to step up with my pally.

Some shitty stuff happened around that time, like losing my priority on the original Amani War Bear because I changed mains even though it was for the good of the guild, but overall, I really loved it.  With a few short-term exceptions, the pally has been my main since.  She started out prot/holy (yes, before dual spec, even) because I fucking HATED BC ret, but by the end of Wrath, I realised how much I HATED healing with her, so I gave ret another try.  Loving it now.  Still MS prot, but when I queue, I go farming so I can just sit back and maul things to bits with my big ol' hammer.

I've tried everything except warriors pretty extensively.  Rogues are fun for picking pockets, but the playstyle doesn't really appeal to me much (though I haven't pvp'ed much because I'm leveling it with the Beloved).  I probably won't ever gear it, but I do want to get it to 85 so I can pickpocket more valuable goodies.

Is there still anything even resembling the remains of a PI guild out there?  I have an 85 laser chicken and an 82 priest that are in a dead guild right now and I'd love to have somewhere to play Horde with friends.  I like my guild on Proudmoore most of the time, but sometimes it's a little too big and a little too cliche.

ETA - Sin, yeah, we are :P

Post by: r00 on May 19, 2011, 09:44:33 AM
Yeah I hated what they did to locks too in 3.0 with the power nerf.  It wasn't soon after that I took a year off from that game.  I am back to affliction now and loving it.  As long as you have a decent dot timer mod and keep them up, you can compete with almost any dps (good Unholy DK's and Hunters will still destroy the meters though).

That is shitty about your war bear fiasco.  8(  Did you manage to finally get one?  I remember after we got them for our core raiders, we were selling runs for 10k gold a pop (and that's when 10k gold was probably like 30k or more now).  I couldn't believe people were willing to pay that much.  We would clear all the way to Lynx boss well ahead of the timer, bring the patron in and get them their bear.  Less than 45min of our time and 5k would go to the guild bank and 500 would go to each guildie that did the run.  Lucrative nerd business!  (now if only I could apply that to real life and actual money.  :'( )
Title: Re: GAMING THREAD aka holy fuck, l.a. noire = ^_^
Post by: Naylzie on May 19, 2011, 02:14:10 PM
Never got it, no. :(  The Beloved was next in line, and I was after him, when we had three straight lockouts of server-side issues that kept us from getting our bears.  Server died on us one week, and we were all ported back to our hearths (or something similarly inconvenient) but already locked to the instance.  Another week, the main tank got feared through a wall and we couldn't do anything to get him out a) quickly enough or b) without sending him out of the dungeon.  I forget what went wrong on our very last chance, but there was badness that we couldn't control.  Neither one of us ever got our bear  :'(

Also, I have been press-ganged into trying Rift, probably starting this weekend.  Apparently I made a really good impression on the friends of a friend when they raided with us for a while, and they REALLY want me to come play.  And since WoW is getting to be less and less enjoyable, I figure, eh, why not?  Free trial is free and Ascend a Friend means moving FAST and FREE, so overall, sounds win/win.

Nah, 'cause then it will die.

Besides, we're talking about Rift, too.  There's a whole contingent checking it out Memorial Day weekend, and at the demand of some friends, I am trying it out RIGHT FUCKING NOW OMG.  I may just have to pay a month to play with people on Memorial Day weekend, lol.

All this talk about WoW kind of makes me want to go back. But then I remember how many other games I missed when I was playing it. : P

Last thing I played was Portal 2 which was quite good. The co-op campaign is absolutely magnificent.
The single player game is great, but kind of has a hard time because of the excellence of the first game. It's just not as focused. Really well constructed, though, and reminded me of why Valve is just so ahead of other studios. So tasteful.

The funny thing is that shortly before playing Portal 2 I had played Dragon Age 2, which is the entire opposite. The first one had me hooked up, even though I don't think the design was very good. This one is just terrible. I think it lowered my standards so much that the utter fun factor of Portal 2 just seemed like divine fucking providence.

I'm replaying the original Fable and I had really forgotten how weak the central story was.  I mean, they literally have a guy come by after every story mission and tell you explicitly what you should do next, because most of the story missions don't really have anything to do with each other.  It's not like through the course of one mission you learn about the next one and slowly uncover the pieces of a puzzle.

I still think the game is fun, but god damn.

On the subject of Things Missed Because of WoW...

Bioshock.  Seeking opinions from a slightly more discriminating audience than I would get elsewhere.  I have to figure at least SOMEONE has played it, if not damn near everyone :P  I'm still regretting not buying it on Steam when it was stupid cheap, but that doesn't mean I'm not toying with the idea of *gasp* not only actually paying for it, but PAYING FULL RETAIL ???

So, thoughts?
Title: Re: GAMING THREAD aka holy fuck, l.a. noire = ^_^
Post by: Goose on May 20, 2011, 02:40:49 PM
Bioshock is fucking amazing.  The grand "moral dilemma" of the game, namely the choice of saving/harvesting the Little Sisters, is very forced and hackneyed, but other than that its a truly amazing experience.  I don't think any other game has ever mixed societal philosophy so thoroughly into its core than this.  There's good reason a lot of people claimed it as "gaming's Citizen Kane".

And "full retail" on Steam is still only $19.99, which a good price for a fine game.  If you're not sure, there's a demo available as well.

Agreed.  Bioshock is amazing.  I played it soon after it came out and I still have fond memories of it.  The atmosphere reminded me of Fallout in it's retro-futuristic mix.  It's a great game and I wholly recommend it.

Currently my game of choice is Torchlight.  It's amazing how I can't seem to stop playing it, even though I have finished it a few times.  I remember the same situation while playing Diablo, simply couldn't stop.

Thirding that Bioshock is amazing, hands down. People are more split on the sequel, though. I thought it was a good sequel, not quite as good as the first but I don't regret buying it. I was a bit disappointed with the multiplayer part of it, but not for any mechanical issue. I just despise the way that they didn't bother to make any distinction between player experience levels. Everyone gets grouped together, so unless you've been playing 23 hours a day since launch day you wont stand a chance against anyone else.

I finally finished everything in portal 2 last night. All the achievements, both campaigns, and once more for all the commentary. Also a great game, but now I have absolutely zero reason to play it again until the DLC this summer. It's a great game with little replay value unless you're one of the people who like doing and perfecting speedruns. Portal 2 is perfect for that.

Dear Activision,

You expect me to pay $60 for each of your titles.
Then you want me to pay $15 for each DLC, which you release copious amounts of. Hmmm....
Then you expect me to continue to pay $60 for that title several years after its initial release.
Hey, look, now you release a new game with only an expansion pack worth of content and ... oh, look, it's the price of a FULL FUCKING GAME.
Oh, wait! Now I have to subscribe to get the BEST features! Sorry, no. I'll go play a shooter that isn't a pile of refurbished crap that stole all its strong points from Battlefield. Hell, I think I'll play BF3 instead. Call me when your games are interesting again.

In the meanwhile, go blow it up your ass, Activision.

Love,
-Zim

I like how Konami announces the Silent Hill HD and MGS HD rereleases and I get all excited. And then I actually look into it and realize that SH1 and MGS1 are not included.

Oh wait, no I don't!

It completely blows; I don't plan on buying either the rereleases now.

What happened to Minecraft?

Is it the new slim model?

In short, it's really bugged now. Most people have had to start entire new maps because of the 'changes', and even then there's still a lot that doesn't work proper. The longer story is much more head-shaking though.

A while back, Jeb (essentially 'the other' programmer) got put on duty for making the Android version so he didn't code anything on the normal releases. Notch took it upon himself to start adding new features without fixing old ones, and it got really backed up. The recent 1.6 release was going to be a bug-fix release, where he actually went to the minecraft-wiki page and fixed everything on the list (100+ items). Then, he added 3 features to the game and released it.

Within 2 hours, he had to release 4 more separate bug patches to fix the new things he just broke. Then another 2 patches over the next couple days. Now, the bug-list is back up over 100 again. Notch has great ideas, but he doesn't know anything about QA apparently. He never knew that the mac-client didnt work well until the first time he used it... a couple days ago.

ok, so i bought duke nukem forever...
and it's not the best game in the world but it isn't a steaming pile of shit either.
if you liked the DN3D you'll like this one.

people tearing apart the "pointless platform levels and puzzles" (you mean, like the one's in the other DN games??!) or the lame jokes (uh, you did play DN3D before, right?) are just looking to bitch about shit.
it's fucking DUKE NUKEM, not Assassin's Creed!

Other things people bitch about...

Graphics:
The graphics are decent enough. Nothing amazing, but this is a 12 year old game. I've seen a lot worse. And you know what, I still enjoy playing regular DN3D and those graphics don't bug me one bit. Then again, I'm old school.

Level Design:
Works for me, and I'm a fucking noob when it comes to modern gaming. I like exploring and there's plenty to explore

FPS Mechanics:
A lot of reviewers seem to want this game to be the next COD... it isn't. Get over it. It's a RUN AND GUN game.
Like most of the other FPS from the 90s.

Load times:
Yea. This sucks. They're long-ass loading between stages. It gets annoying. They do have helpful hints that pop up to pass the time, though... and another reviewer criticized some of them for being overly simple... UH, YEA. THEY ARE. BECAUSE THAT'S PART OF THE JOKE. One of the hints was "remember, if you get stuck you can always check a game faq online to cheat!" another was "If you take damage from falling it's probably your fault!" I'm sorry, but that's fucking funny. If you need a joke explained then it probably is way over your head and you shouldn't be playing duke nukem.

Having said that, yeah load times suck. But do what I do: Check your facebook or twitter or phone or PI. before you know it the level will be ready.

So yeah, it's got problems, but it's not an entire shit-heap. Only thing that really bugs me is the loading times.

Multiplayer is also very fun and reminds me of PI-Quake.
It's also got an XP set up and achievement unlocking thing where you can buy swag for your mansion and different costumes for your Multiplayer character.
Which is really cool. Gives you another reason to keep playing.

So is it fun? Yeah.
And don't believe people when they say the game isn't funny. It's got some definite pop culture hilar.
Everything from Christian Bale melting down to Leroy Jenkins references are in this.
But it's mostly got cheesy b-movie over-the-top-ness... you know, just like THE OTHER FUCKING DUKE NUKEM GAMES. I don't want character development. I just want Duke Nukem.

EAT SHIT AND DIE ARMCHAIR CRITICS!

Just finished Mass Effect.  Holy fuck wow.  Pure awesomesauce from start to finish, with the small exception of hopping around the galaxy half-way through to finish the silly (but optional) collection quests.

You have to do that in the second one too.  I didn't find it too much of a pain though.  The only part of ME2 that was actually dull was all the mineral mining.  Blinding series so far though, I'm greatly anticipating the third instalment.

Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn't played this amazing game series.

I actually made the mistake of looking up in a walkthrough (very carefully so I didn't ruin the story) when my last chance would be to take on all the optional assignments I was getting, and put them mostly off until that point.  I plowed through the main storyline too fast, and as such...
...some of the things I could've learned on the Citadel in my first visit were useless to me later on because I didn't explore it enough in my first visit.  I also never did Wrex's quest, so when I landed on Virmire it was too late and I didn't have the necessary repore with him to calm him down, so Ashley had to put a bullet in his head.  I've heard that has some repercussions in ME2.
I'm definitely not going to make some of these mistakes in ME2, and will pace myself a little better.  The story is bloody incredible though.  In terms of a long-form sci-fi plot, the best I'd seen (not counting books) before this was probably Babylon 5, and the story and the way its being executed here is making that look pretty tame and simple by comparison.

The way your actions in the first game will affect all the way through to the last is one of the features I most love about this game.  I know exactly the part where ME2 will be impacted from your spoiler too.  They got a little more lenient in the second one, most of the bonding/hardening quests you can leave almost right up until the main climax if you wanted to.

The only other thing; if you're a loot whore, ME2 will be a little disappointing as there aren't that many loadouts to collect, if you're playing on PC, I can give you a code for the Collectors weapon and armour which were actually pretty stellar the whole way through.

I've managed to pass on a number of super cheap games by asking myself one simple question

"when am I ever going to actually play this"

I'll probably pick up Bloodlines at the end of the sale if it doesn't end up as a Daily Deal

So far just Runner, and Puzzle Agent 2 (which came out the first day of the sale, poor timing)

That's the exact reason I hardly buy ANY games anymore, regardless of sale pricing. And really, there's only 2 games I'm in the middle of playing and need to finish and 2 open ended play-whenever games. And then a backlog of 20-30 other games I want to play and haven't bought.

Hell, I run the largest Rock Band Nights in the entire bay area and I don't even play Rock Band at home anymore. It feels a little blasphemous to say but it's true.

Small aside, while I like Steam as a concept, I think the program itself is a clunky piece of shit.

Post by: Goose on July 04, 2011, 01:43:31 PM
Yeah, the Steam client can annoy the bejeezus out of me somedays too.  I don't know what Valve's programmers are doing to that thing, but I swear moving from IE to the well-documented-to-be-way-faster Webkit rendering engine actually slowed their shit down a lot.

Got a few hours into Mass Effect 2.  I was not expecting the story to take such an extreme turn right at the beginning, and being that I've been playing the game super-Paragon style (I figure my Shephard is essentially Jean-Luc Picard with hair) I'm not sure how that's going to clash with the story.  I'm hoping a bunch of moral ambiguity and ugly grey zones don't crop up in the plot that end up annoying me.

In terms of gameplay, some of the changes I like (party order controls are significantly easier, powers seem more effective, cover controls are smarter and easier to work with, character textures are significantly more detailed) and a lot of them I don't (finite ammo for practically all weapons, flying around the galaxy map is just silly, clunky resource kerjiggering for upgrades, character animations are definitely more stiff and amateurish-looking, and planet surveying is going to get real annoying real fast).

Even still, with the way this game is slowly laying things out, I have a feeling this one's going to take me a lot longer than the last one.  Right now, I'm not minding that thought.  Despite my complaints, its still awesomesauce.

I didn't get one of the "massive sweeping" beta invites for TOR. I'm a bit disappointed since apparently nearly ten (or more) friends of mine DID get an invite, but at least this way the game will be more fun when I first try it.

Finished Mass Effect 2 last night.  It was good, but overall I'm not impressed with how the story was put together in comparison to its predecessor.
In the first game, when you're given a bunch of missions and you get to choose which order you do them in, each mission still peels back a small layer of the overall plot, and reveals another little piece of information about the Protheans/Reapers.  In this game, even though the primary enemy is now the Collectors, the vast majority of your missions have absolutely nothing to do with actually dealing with the Collectors.  You're usually bouncing around the galaxy collecting people you've never heard of or helping them do something for completely arbitrary reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with stopping the Collectors from attacking human colonies.

From a storytelling standpoint, its really hackneyed and stilted and "gamey" when compared to the excellent methods put forth in the first game.
It was just so FUN to try to unlock everything. To me, it didn't feel like a grind -- it was all really interesting to play through and strive to achieve. That's a rarity in modern games, something I hadn't felt since the platformers of the '90s.

So I have been reading up on D3. Cuz. I WANTS SOOO BAD. However, this makes me very very very very sad.

More or less they will have an Auction House for D3 stuff and it can be bought with in game money (gold) OR real life money... So I'm sure all the gold farmers will be super happy about this. And Bliz will be getting their cut. I wonder if they just thought this would be the way to make them more cash...

Ugh.  Friend of mine linked that article on G+ last night...  All I can say is Activision fails.  That, and Blizz is probably going to be losing my customership pretty quick here.  Things (in WoW) have been grindy in the past, but rarely so mindlessly so as they are in this expansion (excepting Vanilla because that's before my time).  The Beloved is sure to be disappointed in this development about D3, and he's REALLY been looking forward to it, so there's a good chance that ActiBlizz will be losing both of us in short order here.

This is the first expanstion pack I have played from the start for WoW. I got into WoLK when it was pretty much over. I even got carried in ICC a week or so after I hit 80. And now, I'm bored of it... So I'm not reuping my account for next month...

But I don't really care about the in game gold/real life money for it. I mean even in D2 there was stuff you could buy on Ebay... Or what other shady sites... So while I guess it kinda erks me that some people are just gona drop some cash and get geared hella, and those that work and play an insane amount of hours to get the loot. So I guess that kinda bugs me. But the fact that Blizz is in control of it. I'm at lest hoping, that it means it will be done well. And people won't get fucked over...

I just hope they don't make it like wow... (OTHER then resetting  talent tree points.)

I could see playing and making money for the first few weeks/month(s) that the game is out. And then gearing my guy... And making some cash that way. I hate that they would tax you twice if you did that. But whatever, you make some cash, and they make theirs...
I really don't think I will have anything to do with it. And if I do, I would use the in game gold...

I think the best thing about the Diablo games was grinding to get gear...

I am installing D2. And it just had to run a test to see if my video card could handle the sheer POWER that is d2. I giggled...

Ya. Its horrible. and if I alt tab to change tunes or whatever. My start bar (which I have on the right side of my screen,) takes up about a third of the screen. Not always though...

Well as someone pointed out. Even D3 is gona have dated graphics... I mean they have been working on it for a couple years now. And unless they went with Crysis looking game play (which they didn't) it won't even come out of the box brand new and shiny... (err graphics wise...) And since we have seen clips of game play, I would say they are right. However, it does look nice... D2 was a joke when it came out. (AMAZING game. just bad graphics to it...)

Shit the first computer we had could run it. And that thing came with a 6GB HDD and win98 SE (and I want to say 128MB ram maybe) And it Ran D2 like a fucking CHAMP. Load times weren't super fast, but whatever.

I'm really getting fed up of the business models for video games now.  Purchasing or unlocking in game items or locations fo real life money and to get 'advantages' over other users.  Or buying a game where only 3/4 of the disc contents are available only so they can sell you an unlock code for the rest of your damn game.  What the hell happened to free updates?  Not only that, what the hell happened to proper expansions and missions that didn't amount to crappy DLC map packs or a portion of your already purchased discs?

Unfortunately that is the new business model and I am afraid with physical media disappearing, it will be here to stay.  8(  What you will hear next to justify it will be the "this is how we keep the $50-$60 price point.  It is also giving you freedom to choose how you want to play the game."  Get ready for it.    ::)

All things considered, I actually don't think Blizzard's auction house for Diablo 3 is the worst idea, and it sounds like its going to be implemented well.  First of all, there's a listing fee, so you can't just throw your entire haul up there willy nilly without paying out the nose for it.  Secondly, Blizzard doesn't take a percentage of the sale, but a flat rate when something sells, meaning they don't care how much your item sells for, if it does at all.  Thirdly, you can't buy items that are outside your characters abilities or level range, so you can't spend a bunch of dough to equip a level 2 character with armor you wouldn't get until you're level 60.  Finally, Blizzard isn't going to be putting items on the auction block, so anything up there is found by players in game, and nobody is forced to use it at all.  As long as that system stays in place, I really don't have a problem with it.

To be perfectly frank, the same thing happened in Diablo 2, just it was a black market on eBay where you could easily get screwed or swindled.  This destroys the black market that would've popped up anyways.

Unfortunately, in order to implement a system like this, you have to be sure that the players didn't cheat in order to get the items they're placing up for auction, which means verifying the game code before they're allowed to play, thus the always-online requirement.  That's what sucks to me.  Personally, I'd like to see an offline ability, and tie it in with the fact that if you play offline you're barred from the auction house and other online services.  Blizzard isn't giving that option, and that fucking blows.

You're absolutely right, unfortunately I'm just another impotent consumer pissing and moaning about it.  I often wonder about the grey areas of buying gmaes that you have to pay more money for unlocks later despite the data being on your disc, especially now that the UK is looking at reforming it's copyright laws towards allowing the copying discs etc and ownership of the product even to the point where permission will no longer need to be saught to parody or cover music artists songs.

That part I fully understand as well.  In theory it's not a bad idea because it should be giving more control to the player.  However, regardless of what you try and put into place, you will always find money farmers en masse plowing away to make RL money.  It won't stop it when they can be mining items and filling the AH themselves, and you end up paying them and not a regular player.  I'm sure at least some of us have seen how an online games' economy can be set and destroyed by farmers - I recall one christmas period when I was still playing FFXI, one of the main gil selling companies ran a huge sale on gil and it destroyed the economy for several months because so many people bought it and the gil became worthless as prices of coveted and HQ items sky rocketed.  When the money finally went back to something more normal, the AH prices didn't.  I don't blame them (Blizzard) for that because people will find ways to make money no matter what and I'm sure you'll still find items on ebay.  It's really not an easy thing to tackle.

That's the worst part of it, but games are more and more resorting to online verification and penalising you if you don't have an internet connection.  Capcom implemented an offline plan for the Street Fighter IV series (I can't speak for consoles because I don't own one) where if you couldn't establish a connection with GFWL, most of the cast were unselectable.  It would constantly revert back to this if your connection dropped at any point.  Naturally this pissed people off and even Capcom admitted it was a huge mistake and so made it that you wouldn't get any achievements if you were offline.  Blizzard completely writing off the possibility of an offline option is just a huge amount of suck.

Speaking of amazing: Space Marine. Especially the multiplayer component. Relic has outdone themselves; not only are they a master of revolutionary RTS titles, they've come up with something that can seriously compete (and probably annihilate) the new Gears of War game.

It combines RPG elements, perks, elements of third person AND first person shooters, and seamlessly integrates melee and ranged combat -- sword-wielding nutcase with a jetpack coming down on you? Boot him in the chest and gun him down! The game is what it should be -- a freakin' blast to play and an excellent addition to the line of 40K titles from THQ .... or any publisher/developer.

Chaos will do, I'll break out the Black Legion!   I always wanted to play an Eldar Harlequin in one of these games, back in the days of the original Rogue Trader, they were sickeningly frightening in combat and would even make Genestealers look laughable.  I remember years ago in the days of the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, there were plans for an Eldar game similar in style to Skeleton Krew, but it got canned.

yeah i've been meaning to pick up fallout and red dead. man i'm slacking. still got tonnes of games i haven't even finished yet. been so friggin busy lately. and when i'm not busy i'm mostly pro-drumming it up on rockband 3 (thanks for the heads up on that goose-- even if it was months ago-- it's soo friggin' fun in pro-mode!)

also i noticed something i didn't see get mentioned anywhere else, but i bought the pretty hate pack...
sanctified sounds remastered... BUT IT HAS THE OMITTED SAMPLE. it's very faint and buried. but it's totally there. really noticeable when you don't hit any of the drums in that section.

I'm not even gonna lie, it is some bullshit. They have every other "Shock" game but not the masterpieces that are System Shock 1 & 2? :|

I managed to get lucky and I still have the copy my brother bought in 1999. Apparently even USED copies of the 1999 CD-ROM go for a good $40-50 bucks on eBay.

I can't remember who it is specifically that's retaining the rights to the original System Shocks, but I remember reading an article a while back that basically said they're being giant fucking dicks about the games, and aren't letting them out.

I'm playing through Borderlands (I bought the newest DLC. I only finished the Zombie DLC) But anyhoo, I got done with the first play through. And the second is stupid hard. Considering I have way better gear then when I first started the game, and stuff, its crazy how much harder shit is. Mostly its just some area's that have skags, first play there was like 6 and one or two where the big skags. Then this time, there is 15 and they are all the big skags. It sucks. However, its a lot more fun, cuz I have to worry about death. (Granted, loosing money isn't that big of a deal. Since it doesn't matter. AKA D2) BUT tons of fun!

The Claptrap one?  Get Knoxx, it's so much better and has far more longevity due to being the biggest DLC, plus, it's absolutely hilarious listening to Knoxx over the comms.

Money becomes very inconsequential in that game when you get to a certain level and after a while, with a few exceptions, nothing is really worth buying at the vending machines.

Madden 12 has basically eliminated everything I like to do.  Rolling out of the pocket is basically an instant sack.  Play-action passes are basically an instant sack.  Kick and punt returns are virtually impossible.  Those 3 things were pretty much responsible for 60% of my total yards in previous Maddens.  The only reason I win any games at all is because they made the computer's run-defense on higher difficulty levels a lot more reasonable, so I frequently finish games with 200 yards on the ground and 30 yards passing with 3 picks and 5 sacks.

If you agree to pay for a year of wow you get D3 free. I also want to get the collector's edition of D3. I haven't played wow in awhile (My account time was up in July. but I didn't play for most that month.) If I do play, I won't be doing much of the end game stuff. It would all be lvling alts. I have kinda wanted to go back. Cuz I have been bored as hell with everything, and Wow is a great time killer. (and leveling alts is a lot of time.)

Cuz the new expansion looks shitty. Not gona lie. Also the talent trees blow, they are stream line, but still meh...

Hahahaha ya i was saying the same thing with my roommate/coworker. (the one that isn't a pot head.) I said it was just so they could say people were still playing Wow... Even though no one is.  So they can say they still have ten million people playing or whatever... And i may just buy two copies so i can play the moment its live. And get the collectors edition as well. Im also gona nerd it up and take vaction time for it.... Yep.

I have to admit, when the initial coolness of travelling down to Rapture wore off, I was quite underwhelmed by the gameplay itself.  It has some cool ideas, but the gameplay doesn't change in any way during the game and fast becomes repetitve and dull, and the second is just more of the same with a few tweaks.  I honestly found them very boring and completed them simply because I don't like just stopping a game mid way through unless it's just really really bad.

I've got the PC version and I'm trying to wade into the multiplayer slowly but surely. I'm a BC2 veteran (re: the guy who died a lot trying to keep a 1:1 score and failed to do even that) but it's been years since I played an actual... BATTLEFIELD game, if that makes sense (My PC couldn't run BF2 at the time it had launched ... so I skipped out on it).

I'm really having a blast with BF3 though... it's easily one of the most amazing shooters I've played. It's a whole different ballgame than Counter-Strike... I am enjoying rocket whoring shooters out of their sniper decks, though.

My Origin tag, since they require us to use that clunky shit pile:

Dude, it's awesome.  I haven't played Battlefield MP before, I had BC2 but never delved into multiplayer because I hated deathmatch and assumed most of the games would be that.  But this is truly awesome, I've had some super clutch firefights on some of the maps and there are so many tight spaces that quickly turn into kill zones which really emphasize the importance of capturing certain objectives.   Get it and come play with us!

I play more conquest than Rush, though that's just because I generally play with a few guys, but I love how much of an intense clusterfuck Rush can turn into.

Zero, I added you.

I got into the full-access beta in mid-August and have been hooked ever since. Fucking fantastic game. It doesn't push the envelope, but it did what WoW did almost a decade ago: take what the modern MMO formula did right and do it better (adding full voice acting and a comprehensive story help liven things up a lot, too).

To be honest, it reminds me more of a more-polished, more-complete Rift than WoW, although players of either game should feel right at home.

If you need help with any of the flashpoints or quests, let me know... although unfortunately, I don't know if I can access the same beta servers as weekend access invitees get? I'm on the Darth Malak server as-is and I'm trying out the Imperial Agent this build.

Picked up Bastion when it was on a Steam sale a couple weeks ago, haven't had the chance to play it until now.  Bloody awesome game.  To me, it feels like an amazingly well-executed combination of Secret of Mana for tha SNES and Diablo, with absolutely breathtaking artwork and a very solid play style.  My only complaint is that the hammer doesn't have any pushback on it, which makes it quite hard to use without getting your ass handed to you.  It doesn't make sense that you can hit a dude in the face with a 20-lb sledge and he doesn't stop just a little.  But that's such a minor complaint, and I've found other weapons that work great.  I think I got about half-way through in a 2.5 hour session last night (first time I've had to sit down and get some serious game on in months!).

Also grabbed the latest Humble bundle.  Voxatron looks interesting, but a combo of that, The Binding of Isaac, Blocks That Matter and Gish all for dirt cheap is way too hard to pass up.

Now that TOR's NDA is officially lifted, I can speak more freely about the game. Not that I didn't before, but at least I can post a hands-on preview now:

The Nutshell:
Star Wars: The Old Republic is not a sandbox MMO. Players and even the developers have carefully phrased its sales pitch as a "theme park" MMO: there's a lot of rides and games, but all the rides are on rails and the games reward you depending on how YOU tackle them. Is this a good or bad thing? Well, the answer depends:

*If you were looking for SW:Galaxies 2, this is not the game for you.
*If you were looking for a WoW clone, this is not the game for you.
*If you were looking for a substantial revamp of the modern MMO formula, or a solid Star Wars MMO, this is your dream game.

DISCLAIMER: This is a hands-on preview of the BETA PHASE of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Many of these statements, for better or for worse, could be found untrue upon the launch build of the game, as there is a difference between the final beta phase and the launch build. This thread may be updated as more thoughts come to me.

The Good...
PvP: As much as I may bitch about PvP in TOR, my hat is off to Bioware/Mythic for developing a mostly solid, albeit slightly flawed PvP system; crowd control is broken in this build and you'll stand there lookin' pretty for most of the match if you make yourself a target. Where PvP DOES shine is its variety. Just to start, the game has a lot of ways to PvP...
-Huttball: Also known as "Space Soccer," Huttball holds true to the testament that in space, no one can hear you scream as you ragequit and throw your monitor into orbit. This is essentially One-Flag Capture the Flag, except you can throw the 'flag' (as long as you "don't kick the ball. Hutts don't have feet!" Clever girl, Bioware...) and lop the heads off of your enemies who attempt to run the ball into your court. It's kind of like inverted soccer: instead of kicking the ball, you throw it. Exactly like real-life soccer, your aim is to carry the ball (which somehow you can still attack while huddling the ball like your life depended on it -- because it does) into the enemy court while you're fighting off hordes of sweaty foreign people.
-The Voidstar: An Assault & Protect/Attack & Defend game mode with two rounds where the opposing factions must play attacker or defender against the enemy. This scenario has you planting (or defusing) bombs, slicing (or protecting) consoles, and tackling a variety of objectives to breach into the core of the Void Star to retrieve an arming code for a deadly weapon. It's my least preferred of the three scenarios but is still fun, and still rewarding.
-Battle for Alderaan: Three-point [West<-MID->East] King of the Hill where you must hold enough turrets and kill enough players to do damage to the enemy battleship and opposing force. Not only does this give you a fantastic chance to yell "YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP!" when you lose, it encourages good team play rather than roflstomping the enemy team.
-Open World Type A: One of the PvP lakes in the game is sort of like a giant match of King of the Hill; it has defense turrets and traps and is a valuable resource to your faction if you hold it. However, it can be attacked at any time and will fall if overran, surrendering it to whichever faction had the moxy to go all Interstellar William Wallace on Space England.
-Open World Type B: Free-For-All PvP lakes on Tattooine allow you to wade through hordes of dead player bodies to access rare vendors that sell special social and PvP items and gear. However, you can also waste the vendor before, during, or after accessing their goods. If you're able to smoke some players and reach the vendor in time, great rewards await you.. and then you can chop the guy in half so other players can't get a hold of those sweet, sweet rares.
-Dueling: Whip out the rulers, kiddos! Dueling is exactly what you think it is: type /duel and you can challenge anyone, anywhere, at any time to a non-fatal 1v1 match. Dueling is a fun time waster that lets you prove that his Schwartz was not as big as yours, and that you handle it better. [Team Dueling would be nice, but maybe they'll implement that later.]
-Healing is not OP in this game. Pocket healers are practically useless because heals take longer to cast and do less overall: they are a supplement rather than a crutch.
-Most of the issues are related to class balance and broken crowd control, and I hear they intend to address these problems.

TOR is Fully Voiced: While the dialogue wheel is always limited to three choices (and some of them are VERY black and white/good or evil) and the voiced line is sometimes a bit different from the text choice, I have to say that giving everybody and everything (as in, 'conversations' happen with objects-- you click an item and it lets you make choices from the options wheel) a voice or an option makes the game extremely immersing. It just doesn't feel like a grind when everything is so... interactive.

Crafting Isn't A Huge Chore: Crew Skills let you not only send your companions to harvest from component nodules, but you can send one or all of your companions to tackle a crafting-based mission or develop a new item for you. At the cost of cold, hard credits, this can net you rare components and morality points towards your Light Side or Dark Side scores (don't worry, they warn you which is which before you send off your companion). They can also fail you, at which point you show off your pimp hand.

The Companion System is Extensive: those companions I mentioned? They're voiced. They're interactive. You can develop strong bonds and friendships, even engage in romance with the appropriate companion (sorry, no Wookiee love stories here). Companion conversations can give you experience, morality points, and advance your story and give you interesting side-tasks. You also can impress or upset your companion with dialogue choices, earning affection points and levels.

The Social System: Grouping up lets you earn Social Points (everybody gets a batch of points at each conversation; winning the conversation 'leadership roll' nets you the most "SoXP"), which build up into Levels; Social Levels give you access to normally inaccessible, purchased, Social Items, which are pretty much fantastic non-combat items and equipment that let you look really ballin' or perform special emotes and interactions with the world.

Choices Are Immersive: With Light and Dark Side points and personal story choices having an impact on the rollercoaster you're riding, everything you do has gravity. Did you help that homeless Sith cross the street? BAM, your kindnes changed him and he shows up at a crucial moment to help you out. Good deeds pay off... and overtly 'noisy' or 'evil' deeds can get you in trouble. Killing a gang leader can cause his replacement to want to tackle you. Sparing him can mean the leader comes back for you later...

That PUG Scrub Disconnected? Bring a Companion!: While not as smart or as effective in filling the role as a player, if you're in the middle of a flashpoint/dungeon/heroic quest and your 4th disconnects or what have you, you can replace them with your NPC Companion. It's been proven that you can use them to complete most heroics and FPs in the place of a player. Can't fill your last two slots? Your duo or your and your PUG buddy are no longer boned. Handy!

The Bad...
*Difficulty Level: Speaking of rides, the difficulty scale is kind of on a rollercoaster. It was too easy at lower levels, but then the hardcore PvE players who purposely break the game with ridiculous builds meant to dominate went "AW DUDE, THIS IS TOO EASY. UP THE DIFFICULTY." The devs did. [Fun fact: A developer was later quoted as saying "Yeah guys sorry we kinda overdid the difficulty. Just a pinch."] Mind, these players had only played up into the teens/twenties, which is where the game starts to pick up the pace in terms of actually being challenging. I used to feel heroic, only having to stop to catch my breath against high-difficulty mobs who required thinking, and now I walk away with low health after every fight instead of every few fights because their HP was increased as well as their damage output and ability variants.

Combat Fluidity: A global cooldown, queued attacks, slow recharge on my heavy hitters... combat is fun, revamped, and reactive, but it can also be slow and frustrating at the lower levels. What is this, 2004?

Full Voiceovers Could Slow Down Content Production: I have no proof to back this, but I can only imagine that unless they've got a steady stream of content to pour in or already ready to throw in there, the fact that ALL NPCs and PCs speak and respond and react in conversations and EVERY quest giver, EVERY important NPC and even some VENDORS have full-fledged conversations, new contents are probably going to trickle in slowly or come in large chunks.

The Group/Party/Team Cap is FOUR: Raid/Operations are capped in the dozens. Your team? ... well, you guys are capped at 4. At any time. Evne in PvP.

A Subscription Fee... and no Lifetime Options: If I'm going to have to pay for the game I love, at least give me lifetime options. Most games have SOME free-to-play variant and I was disappointed that TOR was not one of them. I don't mind supporting my favorite game, and TOR is one of the few games actually worth subscribing to, but I hope they give us payment options aside from bulk discounts for paying for more months at a time.

And the Fugly:
*Shoddy character creator: It does its job, but that's about all it does. For a game that encourages feeling iconic and touts its superior levels of freedom, this is a huge achilles' heel and fun crusher those of us who care about customization.
-No sliders; as you only get preset faces, color me surprised  It's chock full of choices and unlike other MMOs that have preset facial shapes and features, there is more than one 'good' face preset. This is still disappointing, as even RIFT had facial feature sliders that let you diversify your character.
-Limited accessories and additions; most of the hairstyles seem pretty specific. There's only one type of each accessory and scar. Want the same scar on the OTHER side of your face? LOL, GOOD LUCK.
-No appearance slots for your appearance items, yet...

The Devs Aren't Listening To Testers: A lot of beta testers have voiced a lot of complaints. Every single one of the Bad & Fugly things I've mentioned? Was brought up around or before the testing phase I got into (August 2011). Most of the things they have provided are, at best, distractions from the fact that they aren't addressing the issues we've listed. Sometimes, they make them worse. It makes me wonder if they're giving us the biggest Christmas present ever by launching with a better build.

Quirks and Oddities:
Minor things that made me raise a brow--
-Powertechs (Tank/DPS Advanced Class for the Bounty Hunter) don't get a blaster carbine like Boba Fett. They get... one pistol. I think this must have been how Will Smith's character in M.I.B. felt when he got the Noisy Cricket: it looks silly, you feel silly, but you still pack a wallop. It's just kind of a deceptively wimpy-looking wallop.
-Melee Jedi don't do the damage you'd think they do. Jedi Knights and Sith Warriors have weak class mechanics that are severely limiting and whatever they can do, the mage-tanks (Sith Inquisitors/Jedi Consular's Assassin and Shadow ACs, respectively) do everything they do and more. Ditto for the ranged tanks. The melee tanks are just... almost inoperable in PvP and inadequate in PvE; they lack crowd control, efficient ways to close the gap between their ranged opponents -- who do have multiple crowd control methods and movement debilitating abilities -- and virtually no solid ways to defend themselves besides active defenses on extremely long cooldowns.
-For that matter, lightsabers don't do the damage they should be doing. I'm not asking for visual representations of violence ("HEY MA, LOOK AT ME GO FULL-BLOWN TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE ON THIS GUY'S FACE!"), but recognition that lightsabers are the deadliest weapon in the Star Wars universe would be nice. They do piss-poor damage until you really get up there in levels, talents and gear, and that doesn't sit well with me.
-The 'caster' ACs for the Force-based Jedi and Sith (respectively, the Jedi Consular's "Sage" AC and the Sith Inquisitor's "Sorceror" AC) get one lightsaber attack.... and it's utterly useless. Even in the Extended Universe, I can't think of a single iconic character who strictly used the force didn't use his or her lightsaber to some extent. I feel like I may as well put on a robe and carry a long, staff-like weapon that doesn't do anything and stare at a cast bar -- wait, I already am... FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU--
-Cyborgs are a race like the near-humans, not a way to accessorize humans and other races. ...Wat?
-Quests are called Quests rather than Missions. Maybe it's just me, but this is annoying to me; Han Solo didn't take QUESTS, Han took MISSIONS.
-No player bounties. I feel more like Dog the Bounty Hunter than Boba Fett.
-No truly inhuman racs. I understand that this is because each class had to have a human-y voice, but it's still disappointing when you look back at Galaxies.

The Final Verdict
If the TOR developers will address what we testers have laid out on the list of things that REALLY need attention, well... the game is already solid. Most issues are minor or can be easily resolved. It isn't the game for everyone, because it DOES NOT REVOLUTIONIZE THE MARKET. It did what WoW did almost a decade ago: it takes what every other MMO of the generation has done and does it better, and dares to do things that other MMOs wouldn't or couldn't. TOR dared to dream, and what came of it is a gorgeous, solid revamp of the modern MMORPG formula. However, it doesn't offer much to players who were expecting a sandbox title or to players who wanted to think outside the box. It is, however, a very accessible title that has plenty to do and a lot of variety; if TOR is a game you've been aching to try for these reasons, then you'll be very pleased with the results. If you were on the edge about preordering to begin with or were waiting for a free trial, biding your time may be your best bet.

With all this said, the Great Big Test is coming this weekend (all players who signed up to beta test PRIOR to November 11th, 2011 have acquired access to a temporary, three-day test starting on the weekend of the 25th of November).

If you signed up for it or have prior/current testing experience, tell me what you think! Do you agree? Do you disagree? What's on your mind?

Playing wow. However, with the new expansion coming... I find it looks less enjoyable then ever... The new talent tree is a joke. I almost don't think they care any more... The lack of any real end game content makes me lol. Also, I dislike Pandas... (Just saying)

You know, I have a question, and this is for all the WoW players.  The game has been getting on for a long long time now, I know expansions are being released, but is it still interesting to you guys who have played since the beginning or a number of years?  One of the reasons I gave up on FFXI wasn't because of grinding, but because the game ceased to be interesting and became a collect the item game - I quit as the last expansions was out, but before Abyssea was open and pretty much had every good item in the game from HNMs etc.   So, is it still fun, interesting?

It's still fun, but is a lot more pick-up-and-play friendly than it used to be.  For people who play more casually, this is good.  For people who want more depth and challenge over long periods of time, this is bad.  So it is basically doing what most MMO's seem to do at some point after their first few years...  make it more easy-mode.

I honestly NEVER have to farm materials or craft anymore.  Gold is so easily and readily available in mass quantities within the game now that I buy anything I need in the AH for instant gratification.  Usually anymore you are only crafting to get that 1 items at the top that is bind-on-pickup or helpful for raid-groups.

I enjoy gearing up my characters and completing the latest raids, but after that the boredom definitely starts setting in until the next content release.

I have played for a year and a half. Give or take.  But ya as r00 said, its really easy to pick up and play instead of making it something to do for weeks/months at a time. (One of the people in the guild I'm in got his fresh level 85 toon with quest gear to kill Deathwing in less then a day.) My roomate has been playing since it started, and he hates that it has been nerfed down sooooo much.

I have always been more of a "solo" player then anything. I did a little end game content with Cata. But I fucking hated it... I also dislike the 5 man groups (Not even talking ZA/ZG) as they seam to take a lot longer then in WoLK. ZA/ZG are fucking nightmares when I puged (taking random people do to a dungeon), I'm sure they are better now, but I'm not doing them.  Truth be told, I really prefer to do stuff solo, lvling with friends is fun. With my two 85's I had more fun farming rep then anything else. (Farming stuff is also relaxing to me, so I do do that some times...) I have also been leveling alts... But I get bored of that as well... I go in spurts I do 10-20 levels then I don't play them for awhile...

All in all, I'm kinda bored of it, but I bought 6 months of time (I tried to do the buy a year of wow and get D3 free, but I fucked that all sorts of up.) And I don't think I will be playing when D3 comes out. So I'm pretty much done with Wow... Once D3 comes out, I won't be playing any more...

Some of the other people in the guild have been playing since it came out, and the guy that killed Deathwing in a day since Beta. Hell one guy in the guild was jobless and did nothing but play for 2 years. (He says he had lots of savings, but some of it was mooching off his folks.)

All in all it does get boring and old in spurts... Once I can get it running again, I will be cool with it. But till then, bored as hell.

I bought two. Homefront and Darksiders. I have been playing Darksiders a bit. I like it. Some parts are really easy, well really most of it is... Its like D2 in that you just go kill shit. But kinda FPS in a third person view, and its a huge sword instead of a gun. All in all, its a good time killer.

I haven't played Homefront yet. But I really like the story idea...

The only thing I picked up out of the Steam sales is Portal 2.  Finished the single-player campaign.  I didn't find it as compelling as the first game, but it was still a hell of a lot of fun.  Damn near every Cave Johnson line had me laughing my ass off.

Now I need to find someone to do the co-op stuff with.  Preferably someone who hasn't done it a billion times, I'd like to actually get the exploration aspect of that part in.

Darksiders is going good. I just beat the first real boss of the game, and it took me a few tries, but I got it. Fun game. Really simple.

I really like it so far.  They only allow you to play up to the end of Act I right now, but all classes are available.  I burned through it on Barbarian over the weekend.

Some things I liked:

- the animations are cool.  Monsters get thrown all over the place depending on how you hit them.  Undead sometimes break in half and come crawling back at you and attack again with just their upper torso.  Nearby items get thrown and destroyed when you are battling too.

- Deckard Cain is back in it and one of the first chapters is called "Legacy of Cain."  lolz

- You can craft now.  You befriend the blacksmith in New Tristam and can use him to crush magic items and then use those materials to craft other magical armor and weapons.  You can also pay gold to train the blacksmith and learn new recipes.  Pretty cool, especially at the beginning when you are equipping anything you can find.

What are the hardware requirements like?  I've heard some ridiculous predictions about what they might be, and I didn't believe them, as the Diablo series has never been very hardware intensive.
Title: Re: GAMING THREAD aka holy fuck, l.a. noire = ^_^
Post by: r00 on February 14, 2012, 08:36:35 AM
I am running 2 to 3 year old hardware and had no performance issues and it looked great!  I am running at its suggested video setting for me which are probably "medium-high" settings and at 1080p resolution.  I am using an AMD 4890 graphics card, AMD Penom II x4 940 CPU, and 4 gigs of DDR2 RAM.  So pretty average specs for 2012.

The only thing I would consider close to "performance issues" that I have encountered is only when I first jump in the game.  The harddrive is obviously loading the rest of the map in the background while I play, and that can mean occasional stuttering for the first couple of minutes.  I am sure it is something that could be remedied with a SSD or faster drive/RAID setup and more/faster RAM.  It is very minor though... just something I've noticed and it only happens at the very start of loading the game.

One thing though...  I haven't played it multiplayer yet.  So who knows if I will be whistling a different tune when 4 people are all firing off spell effects at once.  I'll post here about it when I get a chance to play again this week.  That was the next thing I wanted to try after playing it through by myself once.

Post by: sin on February 14, 2012, 09:26:17 AM
Well, that sounds fine for my rig.  Our processors seem about on par, and I think I'm a little better off in terms of RAM than you; my graphics card is absolutely garbage (it's so bad I've found myself lying about it when it comes up in conversation with my geek friends), but I'm looking to possibly upgrade that as soon as I get my tax return back, and from your description I could possibly run it at low settings even without upgrading.

Also, I almost never do multiplayer, so that's not a big concern with me.

They'll apparently be "addressing concerns" with upcoming DLC in April... I'll watch it on youtube.

Here's a little update in iz's gaming world.

Games I've been playing the shit out of:
Tribes: Ascend OB (technically I've been here since late alpha...)
Counter-Strike: Source (polishing up on my Juan Deags for CS:GO)
Killing Floor (the recent update is godlike)
Skyrim

Games I want to play the shit out of:
Hawken
Guild Wars 2
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City [PC] (my brother owns the 360 version, but has been playing it for hours on end so I haven't gotten to play it yet)

Games I want to play the shit out, but are in financial limbo:
WH40K: Dark Millennium Online

Games I played that I'm iffy on:
WoW: Mists of Kung Fu Panda
Diablo 3 (Blizzard must have went to the future and killed my parents or something, I'm really going Batman on their asses as of late)
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Warhammer: Wrath of Heroes
Battlefield 3

Games that I played that I'm never playing again:
TERA (imagine a carbon copy of WoW without the polish of TOR and fifty times as much frantic clicking)

I'm sick of people being surprised there were server issues on day one for Diablo III.  There's been server issues for every major game that's ever included an online component, mandatory or not.

I remember hearing some of the reasoning behind the online requirement for the single player game, and remember it sounding somewhat reasonable at the time.  Unfortunately, while I'm at work all that information is blocked from me, so its hard for me to comment further.

I'll get to Diablo III eventually.  I've still got (of games I've purchased) Zelda: Skyward Sword, Mirror's Edge, and Bulletstorm to get through, plus a few Android games on my tablet.  I'm set in that regard for a while.

Did anyone buy the downloadable version of the game?  I know it isn't on Steam, so I'm curious what the system they've got is and how it works.

With the ability to sell stuff for real money. I don't see why it wouldn't be online all the time. Unless they made it so you couldn't be able to sell stuff if you play off line. Kind of like how D2 had the ladder. However I would like to play offline as well.

Also playing in a group is good. Pretty much the only way to play. You can only see loot that you can pick up, or what other people drop. While better loot doesn't drop, you do get the chance for more stuff if you pool what drops.

Also the server aspect when Cata came out for WoW. Servers were smooth. A bit laggy but it worked really well. One person got on at midnight in the vent server I use (wow guild's). Everyone else was waiting for like an hour and a half? It took awhile. But ya, I don't get why people were bitching about it.

I bought the downloadable game. Blizzard has it set up really easy like. You have to have an account with them. Buy the game it goes to your account/games list. Then you download game after that you have all the files and you just install it. After you install it says checking for updates, and you can play (for d3 at lest.)

I haven't been anywhere near an AH or anything legendary yet, I'm only level 10!  I have found some kind of staff that needs appraisal (it's a ? item), but I doubt it's much good considering I got it in Act 1!  Excuse my Diablo ignorance, but what constitutes as a Legendary?  What colour?  So far I've come across: no colour (basic shit I guess), white border, blue border and the ? item which I didn't really have a colour because it needs identifying.

And to identify it you just right click it, it casts a spell and then you know what it is.

hahah no worries. The first two you either had to have Cain identify them, or carry a scroll. Either way. Now you just right click which is kinda dumb. Why bother doing it at all?

The group I'm in has made it to the second act in hell a little ways into the second act. Shit is fucking hard. While there was some spots on nightmare that weren't easy, this is fucking nuts. Rare mobs are shitting on us. It's cool, but not really, also the loot that is being dropped is horrible. And now it's pretty much choosing between living and hitting like a wet noodle, OR being a glass canon. And we can't say for sure it's our gear being not great, or just Hell being stupid fucking hard...

We got the secret cow level tonight. There is no cows. Just SUPER happy bears (like teddy bears) and my little pony unicorns. It's about as out of place as you can get in a Diablo game. Well, I guess the ponies and bears are "evil"... We did it on normal, so there was no challenge...

I like being able to swap out skills on the fly. (you do have to wait to use the skill and if it's in cool down you have to wait to change it/use it.) However, some of the skills are shit. (I'm a wizard, and the normal skills take no mana. They do shit for damage...)

Also, I wish there was a way to play offline. Right now it doesn't bug me cuz pretty much all my time is spent playing it. However, later on, I would like to level a toon or two on my own. I know why I can't, but I wish they set it up so that you could. (At some point we will be able to sell items for real money. AND if you can duplicate them while offline, get online and sell them. That would be an issue. I also love how much of a cut Blizzard is taking from the real money AH. Right now they take 100g if you sell the item (if you don't its free) and then 15% of what ever the sell price is. I have made a good chunk of change from it. BUT I don't know that I will want to sell stuff for real money. Just seams like more effort then it will be worth. (I'm pretty sure that is how Blizzard will be making money off the game for servers and maintaining them. And what not.)

Personally, I fail to see why this would be more dishonest than buying your gear without playing the game.

I received my Diablo 3 yesterday and enjoyed it so far.  It showed me just how scaled back an minimal the beta was, which is good.  I am playing it through on my own first since that's the only way I can enjoy the story and lore.  PM me if you want my battletag.

While I won't be buying anything out of the real money ah, I have bought one thing out of the for gold ah. But if I was selling stuff in the rmah I would be pissed if someone was undercutting me and duplicating his items.

I would like to see them do the same thing they did with D2. Make a online only Ladder, and then a offline/online ladder. And you can sell only to each one. (and have a hardcore section for each.)

A lot of people are pissed about the RMAH thing, to be honest, I can completely understand why they did it; people are going to make RM out of the game regardless, they do it on every MMO, Blizzard clearly understand that they can never stop it, so they might as well make some money out of it when others are doing the same thing with their game and players can do the same without fear of having accounts banned should they choose to sell anything for real money.

I, like Aaron however, wouldn't buy anything from an RMAH.

The RMAH thing pissed me off when I first read about it, but then I realized it was an "if you can't beat them, join them" thing like static said.  Plus, they are giving people a place where they know they won't get screwed over.

So my group hit into the 50s and we tried Hell yesterday.  Dear god.....  Lots and lots of farming ahead to raise DPS levels.  The first few areas weren't too bad, but some of the champion and unique mobs just absolutely fucked our couch!   So we did a lot of boss farming with Azmodan and Diablo, but the spoils were pretty weak - not a single rare or higher!  Couple of the guys got some Legendary drops on a previous night though, plus, it's all early days.

I have to say, I'm loving how you can just drop in and out of games and that you can farm and do bosses with a lot more ease than setting up an alliance and such with any MMORPG.  Whilst I don't regret never playing the previous games, I am really enjoying this one.

Ya bosses drop shit for gear. The mobs right before Azmodan drop better gear by far. That's also how we power level people. But ya, the rare mobs fucking suck. It's also sad they are a lot harder then the bosses.

Finally finished Bioshock a week-ish ago.  The story kinda dragged in the beginning, which is half of what led me to not finish it on my first trip out.  But, once things get moving about halfway through, holy crap did it get good.  Loved it.  I would've liked a longer ending, it just seemed a little abrupt, even though it did finish off everything that needed to be.

Also played my way through Mirror's Edge after picking it up on Steam for $5.  That was a seriously underrated game as well, but way too short for its initial price tag of $60.  In the exact opposite of the previous game, it could've used another level or two in the beginning to slowly ramp up the acrobatics required and get the player used to it.  I can see why a lot of people didn't like it at first, if they approached it like any other FPS.    You definitely have to get into the game's mindset to really get what its going for, but when you do, wow is it an awesome ride.

Next on my list, Bulletstorm.  Then possibly Rage.  Depends if I want to wait for a new computer before playing that or not.  I kinda do, but that might not happen any time soon.

YES!  Exactly!  I've been soloing through hell and the bosses are all a cakewalk compared to campion and rare bosses (we all come from FFXI, we keep calling them NMs!), especially when you get fast mobs, invulnerable minions, molten and a fucking chain binding them all together!

I started a Barb last night for a laugh and it's actually the first time I've ever enjoyed playing a tank character, mainly because you can soak up damage as well as you can throw it back out, I'm so used to tanks being weak as piss on the attacks and having to rely on everyone else to kill things whilst you just stand there like a wall.

I really enjoyed that too, it was a very simple but beautiful looking game too with the stark contrasts in colours.  It had a pretty decent Cyberpunk storyline as well.  Like you, I would have preferred a little more step-up levels where you can practice and learn your moves a little better, it gets a little frustrating at first, but once you figure everything out, it's very enjoyable and works surprisingly well in an First Person environment.

Bulletstorm was fun, it was even more fun just trying to do ridiculous combos with the lash whip and various weapons, brilliant game.  Rage was so so, I picked it up because I enjoyed Borderlands and have a penchant for anything post apocalyptic, it had some very interesting missions and some of the races are really fun, it's just a shame it was faily short and had no additional content (unless I'm missing something).

With Rage, I'm not expecting much in terms of complex gameplay or in-depth story.  Its an id game, I know what I'm getting: shiny.  Lots of splattery complex shiny.  Anything else is just icing when it comes to id games.

Pretty much nail on there head bud.  You fast stop caring about the storyline and just go about smashing things.  The only downside is that there aren't too many sidequests to do or locations to explore that you won't come to anyway.

Is anyone still playing Diablo 3?  I have to say, considering all the hype over the series and the anticipation of this one ever getting a release, it's just so incredibly boring and shallow.  There is absolutely -no- endgame of any kind and item rolls are just so horribly randomised that you can farm for days and have nothing to show for it after NPCing every dropped item or salvaging them for materials.  Even ilvl items have so little deviation to pick them apart from lower level items and in some cases ilvl63 item stats are WORSE than items as low level as the 20s!  How does that work?

Dungeons are particularly boring now, I've farmed certain areas so much that I autopilot the entire map (which is only rotated on different excursions rather than any true kind of dungeon randomisation) and there is nothing in place to keep the experience exciting or interesting - events are so few in number that you generally see the same ones over and over and no longer provide any kind of distraction from the mundane task at hand.

I'm not too bothered any more by 'silly' monster affixes that people are still complaining about, CM build wizards tends to laugh in the face of anything and if you're smart you'll use teleports wisely and position yourself well for attacks whilst avoiding desecration/arcane/molten/plague traps it's not a big deal and I've also completed Inferno on Barb -  The problem is that there is now literally nothing to do.

I agree for the most part.

It got too repetitive for me by 57 and I haven't played in a few weeks.  Plus, if they are going to have separate loot tables, why not increase the drop rate of class related loot for the character you are playing?  90% of my gear had to be auction house purchased because of lack of relevant drops for me.

It's fun, but way, way too short and replayability is limited.

For now, I have been playing Star Wars:The Old Republic.  The storyline is pretty decent and I am enjoying it.  It should hold me over until the next WoW expansion.

Not only this, but how about not having them randomly rolled when it IS class specific?  Why on earth do I want Str & Dex on a Wiz only helm?  The amount of class specific items that just roll as completely unusable due to it not even possessing the classes main stat is just unbelievable.

It's far too short, Act IV is an absolute breeze, I was very surprised when I reached Diablo so quickly during the first play through.  Also Act II is one of the most boring sections of any game I've played in a long while, fun though it is running around the same desert sands for hours without the scenery changing one little bit.  Act III fun once you get past Ghom, I found the run up to him with the ramparts, catapults and the breach quite dull, but once you start travelling to hell it's decent.

I'm just pretty disappointed, I missed out on the series previously and bought D3 due to the acclaim the series has gained.

I ended up putting Rage on the backburner again.  I caught an awesome sale on a GTX560 (which would be a serious upgrade from my 8800GT), but my damn motherboard wouldn't take the thing.  It won't fit a double-wide card because the SATA ports are in the way.  Damn thing won't seat properly.  Boourns.  So, I'm stuck waiting until I have enough money for a whole new rig in order to play Rage.

But then came the Steam sales.  They roped me into a play queue that's just ridiculous.

First came Penny Arcade: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness - Episode 3, which if you bought for $5 on release day also got you Zeboyd's previous two games, Cthulhu Saves the World and Breath of Death VII.  Played through PA:OtRSPoD3 (wow what an unholy acronym), it was just as good as the previous two eps despite the drastic change in graphical style.  The writing really is the core of these games, and that's really what shines.  Started into Chthulu Saves the World, which is equally awesome in a completely different way.  This game does for old-school RPGs what Tenacious D does for rock 'n roll.  Love it.

Then came the Steam summer sale.  Picked up Legend of Grimrock, Torchlight, and Bioshock 2.  Plus I figured out what was stopping me from getting past the bloody tutorial in Magicka (turns out which cloak you choose at the outset actually makes a difference, and without knowing it I chose a cloak that makes it impossible to heal yourself, which is a core part of the tutorial), so I can now attempt to play that.  Add onto that a copy of Xenogears Chronicles for the Wii, and I've got a serious queue of gaming going.

Can't argue with getting six games for less than $20 though.  Steam sales will kill us all.

i5 3570k
ATI 7850
8 gbs of ram

I'm going to OC it when I transfer it over to a new case next month. I used my old ATX case and hard drive to save cost. I'll upgrade those later.

I've never built a computer, but I NEED to upgrade my graphics card, and I have never done anything remotely comparable to that, computer-wise (although I hear it's pretty easy).  I figure someone will give me a decent graphics card for christmas if I put it on enough lists, and I can find a guide on the internet to keep me from disabling my whole comp through my ineptitude.  Anyone have any suggestions for a good "for the money" graphics card?  My current one is so bad that I am so ashamed of it that I will not disclose what it is, so whatever you suggest will be better...

Can you tell us a little more about your rig? We'll need to know the kind of power supply you've got (this is probably the most important thing you can tell us). If you can tell us the wattage then that SHOULD be enough to go off of, but put as much detail as you can please, obviously amperage, rails, and exact make and model can help a lot too since it would suck if we told you "go buy [card]" and it fries because the model you have wasn't a good fit for that card.

Some other things that will help is:
1. a clearer budget ("For the money" could mean a $100 budget card or a $250 beast that'll run whatever game or application you throw at it and eat it alive, or a $400 card that'll set you for the next 4-5 years depending on the rest of your rig, even),
2. what kind of games you're looking to play (and at what resolution over how many monitors?),
3. what kind of RAM and CPU and motherboard you're running with now (your motherboard will help a lot here too. Making sure your motherboard/CPU/even your memory won't bottleneck a more powerful and thus more expensive card)
and 4. if you can tell us what kind of graphics card you think your case will fit. Some of the higher-end gaming GPUs get hella long and hella wide.

tl;dr: if you can just tell us more about your power supply and budget and maybe other details, as much as you can tell us, folks like Goose and myself and others can surely help you pick the right card for your rig and your budget!

P.S. Putting a computer together and taking out/putting in components is cake, especially for replacing a component already in there. A graphics card is about as easy as taking out a bent Lego and putting a shiny new one in. Just make sure to follow the standard precautions (like discharging static AWAY FROM YOUR CASE AND INTERNAL COMPONENTS), dusting out the rig when you open it up, etc.

I absolutely love it, they've hit a home run with it for sure.  I've just finished my first playthrough with Zero and he's a lot of fun, he can be a bit squishy at earlier levels, but I pumped everything into his Bloodhed tree to unlock Many Must Fall, which is the most fun game-changer ever.  Coupled with Execute, being able to leap into the air, kill a buzzard, kill something else on the way down and still remain invisible to kill more foes is just awesome!   I'm glad that he's a valid character with highly legitimate melee abilities as opposed to being a tacked on ninja character for novelty value, in fact just for plain fun value, I would never go the sniper route with him simply because being in the fray and dropping decoys is simply too enjoyable.

I might be too late, but you'd be better off skipping Phantom Hourglass and playing Spirit Tracks instead. PH has this really annoying timed central dungeon it makes you replay like 4 times. I never finished the game because of it.

I love Bloons Tower defense games. They have a mobile game called Bloons TD Battles for andriod and ios. ANYHOO it's awesome. Cuz it's minimal and you can play against real people. Like other people, and while I don't have a perfect record. I have done pretty well. I have been playing the shit out of BTD5 cuz it's awesome. And a great time killer. (it's a flash game but awesome none the less.)

Really irritated at myself that it's taken me this long to play "Symphony of the Night."  Played it pretty much all weekend non-stop.  I think I agree with the general internet consensus that it MIGHT be the best Castlevania game.

New Diablo xpac is out today... When I get home from work (short day) I'll be playing that.

They have changed a lot about the game and for the most part I think it's all for the better. the AH is shut down. Drop's and the gear that drops is a lot better/for your class more so. Like playing a Wiz I got a lot of Wiz gear and a few items not for the wiz. BUT upgrades dropped a lot more often. Granted I wasn't super high lvl 60(23) but it was fun again, and less broken...
